Chapter 40: Don’t Give Up On Me.

*Eason*

“Eason, what the hell happened back there?” Veronica’s voice was tight with worry and judgment.

How could I possibly explain what I’d just lived through?

“I... I can’t…” I choked out, my voice raw.

Veronica scoffed, gripping the steering wheel even tighter. “I told you she was bad news, you should never have gotten back together. Just look at the state you’re in.”

“Don’t start, please.”

“Why shouldn’t I? She’s not right for you, and you need to come to terms with that.”

Her words hit me like a punch to the gut. I knew with every fiber of my being that Lena was right for me, but was I right for her? Especially when I was leaving her like this? I turned in my seat, staring back at the way we’d come. Every fiber of my being screamed at me to go back, to help her somehow.

“We have to go back,” I said, my hand already on the door handle. “I can’t leave her like that.”
