"I miss Scarlet!" Sera said, slumping onto the library table with a pout. "She's been gone for a week now. Even the headmistress keeps coming by to ask if she's returned."
"Yeah, I noticed that too," I replied, glancing toward the window. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the room, but they only seemed to deepen the emptiness left by Scarlet's absence. "I wonder what's going on."
"Do you think she's in trouble?" Sera asked, her voice quieter now, tinged with worry.
"I hope not," I said, though doubt lingered in the back of my mind. Scarlet wasn't the type to run away without a reason.
Sera leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms. "I hope not too. But it's not like her to vanish like this. Do you think…" she hesitated, biting her lip, "do you think it has something to do with that thing she mentioned before?"
"What thing?" I asked, frowning.
