Since their discovery at the library, Li Lin and Ye Xiao had been unable to sleep through the night. The symbols in the book, the ritual summoning spirits, and the symbol of "loss of control" haunted their minds. It all felt like a massive, dark mystery pulling them deeper into an abyss. Despite their growing fear, they knew they had to keep investigating. If they didn't, they would never escape this supernatural nightmare.
Early the next morning, Li Lin and Ye Xiao returned to the crime scene. Though the basement had been sealed off by the police, it still radiated an unsettling atmosphere. Ye Xiao squeezed Li Lin's hand tightly, as if transferring strength to him, and they silently walked towards the entrance.
"We can't turn back now," Ye Xiao whispered.
Li Lin nodded. They both understood that every step from here on could lead them into danger. But it was precisely because of this that they were more determined—they had to find out who had performed the ritual and what their true intentions were.
The basement was as damp and cold as before. The strange symbols on the ground, still visible even after the police's inspection, lingered like ominous scars. Li Lin couldn't help but recall the victims, imagining the terror they must have faced before their deaths. His stomach churned, but he forced himself to stay calm and keep looking.
Ye Xiao scanned the area, and suddenly, her eyes fixed on a corner of the room. That spot had been sealed by the police, but now it showed clear signs of having been disturbed. She knelt down and examined the ground closely, finding a book that had been deliberately hidden. Its cover was yellowed and worn, seemingly from the same series as the book they had found in the library.
"Look at this," Ye Xiao handed the book to Li Lin.
Li Lin carefully opened it, and what he saw made him gasp. The book didn't just contain records of symbols; it described, in detail, the steps to perform a summoning ritual. What was even more unsettling was the mention of a ritual at the end called the "Soul Sacrifice," which appeared to enhance the summoning by offering up human souls.
"This is insane," Li Lin frowned, "They want to use killings to control the spirits."
Ye Xiao's face turned pale, but her voice remained steady. "That explains the strange deaths. We have to find the person responsible and stop them."
Just as she finished speaking, the air in the basement suddenly grew ice cold. Li Lin and Ye Xiao exchanged nervous glances, their hearts racing. The shadows around them seemed to twist and shift, as if something was watching them from the darkness.
"We need to get out of here!" Li Lin grabbed Ye Xiao's hand and sprinted towards the exit.
Just as they reached the door, a strong gust of cold wind slammed into them, and the lights began to flicker. Li Lin turned around and saw a vague black figure forming in the far corner of the basement, as though it was crawling out of the walls.
"Run!" Ye Xiao shouted, gripping Li Lin's hand tightly as they burst out of the basement. They slammed the door shut behind them, only to hear a low, guttural growl emanating from the other side.
They stood there, gasping for breath in the eerie silence around them. For a moment, neither of them spoke, their eyes wide with terror and confusion.
"What… what was that?" Li Lin finally stammered, his voice shaking.
"I don't know, but it clearly doesn't want us to know more." Ye Xiao said, her voice equally strained. "But that only proves we're on the right track."
Driven by fear, they quickly decided to take the clues they'd found and leave for further research. Back at their apartment, Li Lin spread the book out on the table, eager to find more details about the ritual.
"We have two options now," Ye Xiao said as she flipped through the pages. "First, we can keep tracing the origin of these symbols and try to track down whoever performed the ritual. Second, we can try to decipher this ritual ourselves and find a way to stop it."
Li Lin thought for a moment, then nodded. "We should do both. If we can decode these symbols, maybe we can stop more people from dying."
The next few days of their lives were completely consumed by these eerie clues. They spent hours combing through books, trying to uncover more information about the symbols and rituals. They also contacted several occult scholars in the city, hoping to get some insight. However, each time they made progress, it seemed like the dark forces working against them would throw obstacles in their way.
One evening, as Li Lin was studying the book in their apartment, the lights began to flicker again. An inexplicable coldness filled the room. He felt a growing sense of unease and immediately became alert.
"Ye Xiao! Come here, quick!" Li Lin called out.
Ye Xiao hurried into the room, and when she saw the book in Li Lin's hands, her expression darkened. One of the pages had started turning by itself, and the symbols on it seemed to glow faintly as though activated by some unseen force.
"Something's wrong…" Ye Xiao whispered.
A passage of text suddenly appeared before their eyes. It read: "When the spirit is fully summoned, the world of the living will collapse entirely."
The two of them stared at each other, the chill from the book creeping into their bones. They realized then that things were far worse than they had ever imagined. If they didn't stop the ritual soon, the entire city—and perhaps even more people—would fall into a disastrous cycle of death and chaos.
