The boat's engine roared to silence as the crew prepared to disembark on the shores of Ebinigma. Misho stepped onto the sand, feeling the weight of the island's ominous presence settle over him like a shroud. The air was thick with humidity, mingling with the scent of salt and decay, an unsettling reminder of what lay ahead.
Misho helped Lena and Elmira disembark. He took out of the boat one backpack, in the backpack was food, water and a map, and things that could be of any use.
They were 3 miles (4km) away of the nearest bunker. Luckily, Misho and Elmira were there, so they could go faster, without the map. As they look closer to the island, tension grew. What was noisier before, was now quiet. The island knew one thing, there were traitors and enemies and it had to kill them all.
"Alright, everyone," Misho said, his voice steady but firm. "We need to split into groups and head to our designated locations. Remember, communication is key. Stay alert."
Lena, the stoic captain, nodded. "We should stick together until we reach the first waypoint. The jungle looks… alive."
As they moved into the thick foliage, the sounds of the island surrounded them—an eerie chorus of rustling leaves and distant calls. The path grew darker, the trees closing in, casting long shadows that danced in the corner of their eyes. Misho felt a shiver run down his spine, an instinctive warning that they were being watched.
"Did you hear that?" one of the team members, a young mercenary named Gus, whispered. His eyes darted nervously.
"It's just the wind," Jace, the old guard, replied dismissively, but even he couldn't shake the feeling of unease.
Suddenly, the underbrush erupted. A trap laid long ago was triggered by Gus's footfall, sending him tumbling backward as the ground beneath him exploded into a cloud of dirt and debris. Misho instinctively lunged to help him, but the explosion had revealed a hidden underground passage.
Elmira starts to guide them. They enter the passage, Cay, Man, Gus and Lena are all geared up, Misho and Elmira are together searching for traps and an inlet for the bunker. As they venture into the passage, Misho feels an oppressive weight, almost as if the island itself is alive and watching them. "What do you think is down there?" Elmira asked, his voice trembling slightly as he peered into the darkness. "Only one way to find out," Misho said, steeling himself. They lit their flashlights, illuminating the crude symbols carved into the walls of the passage. Symbols he recognized from his grandfather's research.
"They look like the markings in the old texts," Misho murmured, his heart racing. "What was he trying to summon?"
A low growl echoed from deep within the passage, freezing the group in place. The whispers grew louder, a cacophony of unintelligible voices. Suddenly, a creature lunged from the shadows—a small, feral hybrid, its eyes glowing a sickly yellow.
"Get back!" Lena shouted, raising her weapon, but the creature was fast, darting between them with a hiss. The team reacted instinctively. Jace took aim and fired, the shot ringing out like a gunshot in the stillness. The creature yelped, staggered, but didn't fall. Instead, it turned and dashed deeper into the shadows, leaving a trail of phosphorescent slime. "What the hell was that?" Gus gasped, panting. "Something my grandfather made," Misho said grimly. "We need to keep moving. This place is a nightmare."
Lena observed Misho closely, sensing he was keeping something from the group. He looked like he knew exactly what that creature was. Taking charge, Misho led them deeper into the underground passage, the oppressive atmosphere growing thicker with every step. The whispers intensified, wrapping around them like a fog, heralding the true horrors that awaited.
Lena was growing unrestly. As Misho led the way, the narrow passage twisted and turned, the air growing colder and more oppressive. The glow from their flashlights flickered against the damp walls, revealing more of the disturbing symbols—some resembling grotesque creatures, others depicting scenes of chaos and despair. "What was this place used for?" Elmira whispered, his voice barely audible over the sound of their footsteps. Misho hesitated, trying to suppress the memories that threatened to surface. "It was a research facility," he finally replied. "A place where they experimented with the island's genetics. My grandfather thought he could control it." Misho continued while looking for his radio, "Well, he did suceed, somehow. But only once."
"Control what?" Gus asked, no caring a bit for what Misho said about Reese succeding,
"The very essence of life," Misho said, a bitter edge to his voice. "He believed he could create new forms of life—things that would push the boundaries of nature. But he only unleashed nightmares."
Suddenly, a series of low growls echoed from the depths of the passage, sending a jolt of fear through the group. Misho's instincts kicked in. "We need to move. Now!" As they hurried deeper, the passage began to widen, and the air turned thick with an unnatural warmth. Misho felt an unsettling vibration beneath his feet, a pulse that seemed to resonate with the very heart of the island. He glanced back at his team, the determination in their eyes mingled with fear.
"Stay close!" Misho ordered, gripping his flashlight tighter. "We're nearing the bunker."
They rounded a corner, and the passage opened into a vast underground chamber, dimly lit by bioluminescent fungi clinging to the walls. In the center stood a massive metal door, engraved with the same cryptic symbols they had seen earlier.
"Is this it?" Lena asked, awe and trepidation evident in her voice.
Misho approached the door, his heart racing. "Yes. This is the main bunker." He stepped closer, brushing his fingers against the cold metal. "But we need a code to get in. My grandfather had a system for accessing these places."
"Do you remember it?" Elmira asked, urgency lacing his tone.
"I think so," Misho replied, closing his eyes and digging deep into his memories. He focused on the patterns his grandfather had taught him, the rhythm of the numbers echoing in his mind. "It's a sequence based on the markings."
"Let's hope it works," Lena said, glancing nervously at the shadows creeping around the edges of the chamber.
Misho stepped back, ready to input the code when a loud crash echoed from behind them. The passage they had just come through trembled as something massive began to advance, the ground shaking with each step.
"Run!" Misho shouted, panic flooding his voice. The team scrambled toward the door, adrenaline fueling their movements as they desperately tried to reach the safety of the bunker.
As they reached the door, Misho fumbled with the markings, feeling the heat of pursuit closing in. The growls grew louder, reverberating through the chamber, a haunting reminder of the creatures lurking just out of sight.
"Come on, come on!" Lena urged, her eyes darting back toward the shadows.
Misho input the final sequence, and with a resounding thud, the door began to slide open. They rushed inside just as a monstrous figure lunged into the chamber—a hulking hybrid, its eyes filled with primal rage.
"Get it shut!" Misho yelled as he pressed the door controls with frantic urgency.
The door slid closed just in time, the creature's roar echoing against the metal as it slammed against the barrier. They heard it screeching on the other side, furious and relentless.
Panting, Misho turned to face his team, their faces pale and wide-eyed. "We made it," he breathed, but the relief was short-lived as they surveyed the vast, dimly lit bunker that awaited them. The walls were lined with faded photographs and data screens flickering with static.
"What now?" Gus asked, still trembling.
Misho scanned the room, determination hardening his expression. "Now we find out what my grandfather left behind—and hope it's enough to save the people still on this island."
The team moved deeper into the bunker, unaware that the true horrors of Ebinigma were just beginning to unveil themselves.
