While Su Xiaoxiao was taking care of her brother, Su An, the Fatty leaned in close to Jiang Cheng's ear and whispered, "Doctor, is what she said true?"
Having been repeatedly deceived by his teammates, the Fatty had lost his basic trust in people. Now, he only trusted the doctor's words, not even trusting himself.
"I feel like she agreed too easily," the Fatty glanced at Su Xiaoxiao, who was facing away from them and crouching down to wipe her brother's cheek. He swallowed, then spoke again, "I thought we'd have to use some tricks to get her to talk."
Jiang Cheng looked at the Fatty with disdain. He thought this Fatty was a far cry from the one he once knew.
He had changed for the worse, now talking like those enemy agents being interrogated who never give up.
"And what's with the altar..." the Fatty continued.
"She's probably telling the truth," Jiang Cheng interrupted the Fatty's endless chatter, tying his shoelace while glancing at Su Xiaoxiao and Su An. "She wants to finish the mission as soon as possible, because that's the only way her brother might survive. As for who leaves first and who gets the reward, she can't even think about that anymore."
"Doctor…" the Fatty sounded quite anxious, but he tried to remain calm as he asked, "You believe her when she says he's her brother? Couldn't that be a lie?"
"You saw it too," Jiang Cheng responded.
"The kid's big, but his brain isn't any better than mine," the Fatty pointed at his own head. "He might have been brought in by Su Xiaoxiao, then used as a shield at the crucial moment, to confuse us."
"Pfft," Jiang Cheng paused and looked the Fatty over, before saying, "Come on, Fatty, tell me the truth. Did Nightmare do something to you while I wasn't around?"
"Doctor, Nightmare didn't give me any special treatment when you were here either," the Fatty grumbled.
"Two points," Jiang Cheng sat up straight and raised two fingers. "First, no one would drag around a shield when their own life is in danger."
"Second," Jiang Cheng added, "How do you explain the gunshot wound on Su An's shoulder?"
The Fatty paused but opened his mouth, seemingly about to argue again.
But Jiang Cheng cut him off, pinching the Fatty's round face and lightly patting it. "Fatty," Jiang Cheng sighed.
"What are you doing, doctor?" The Fatty widened his eyes.
"You look good when you try hard," Jiang Cheng said sincerely, "But don't push yourself too hard, because you don't have a brain like mine." His tone suddenly became passionate.
The Fatty: "…"
From the time they had left until now, at least 4 or 5 hours had passed, but the sunlight overhead was still dazzling, almost blinding.
It was as if time had lost all meaning here.
Jiang Cheng huddled behind a rock, and Su Xiaoxiao dragged her brother inside. A little sunlight was good, but too much could be harmful.
The Fatty took a moment to check on Su An. He was still unconscious.
But strangely, his face, which had been pale and bloodless, seemed to have improved slightly, and the bleeding had stopped.
Su Xiaoxiao wiped the blood from her hands and then sat next to Jiang Cheng.
Neither of them spoke. One stared at the sea, the other gazed into the distance.
The Fatty suddenly felt that this scene was like something out of a TV drama, a typical scene just before a breakup.
After a while, the Fatty couldn't hold it in anymore. He was worried that night might suddenly fall, and it would be dangerous outside the building.
The creatures in the forest and the people from the so-called Blackstone Town might appear at any time.
But the Fatty felt that the people from Blackstone Town were more suspicious than the creatures in the forest. They only appeared at night, and what kind of people lived in a town on a city by the sea?
"Excuse me," the Fatty raised his hand. "When are we going back?"
Jiang Cheng glanced at Su Xiaoxiao. She didn't respond. "Let's wait a bit longer," Jiang Cheng said, narrowing his eyes.
His gaze, however, was fixed on the building's direction. The door was open, and inside, there seemed to be an unshakable mist.
"Are you waiting for something?" the Fatty blinked. He thought he had figured out their plan.
"Almost," Su Xiaoxiao said, propping herself up and jumping down from the rock. Her body, though petite, had excellent proportions, and her white, shining legs had even, graceful lines.
In a daze, the Fatty found himself carrying the unconscious Su An on his back again. Jiang Cheng and Su Xiaoxiao walked in front, and the Fatty followed behind with small steps.
This wasn't just Su Xiaoxiao's decision; the doctor didn't seem to oppose it either.
Before entering the building, Jiang Cheng and Su Xiaoxiao paused for a moment, then stepped into the dim interior.
The building was dilapidated, with remnants of time scattered everywhere. Luckily, they were walking slowly, so the Fatty could barely keep up while carrying someone.
After passing a broken stone pillar, Jiang Cheng suddenly stopped. The Fatty, who was keeping a distance of less than a meter behind, almost bumped into him due to the sudden halt.
"Who's there?!" Jiang Cheng shouted.
The next second, Su Xiaoxiao produced a sharp-edged stone from her hand.
A figure slowly emerged from behind the stone pillar. "Don't worry," Chen Ran said casually. "It's me."
The Fatty stared at him and asked, "What are you doing here?"
"There weren't any clues in that room, so I decided to take a walk," Chen Ran said, a faint smile on his lips. "It's better than just waiting."
He glanced at Su An, who was behind the Fatty, and pretended to be surprised. "What happened to him? Did something happen?"
It was obvious that Chen Ran had noticed them after they entered, then hid in the shadows, now pretending to bump into them by chance.
"When did you come out?" Su Xiaoxiao asked.
"Oh, well…" Chen Ran tapped his head, then smiled and said, "Probably not long after you left."
Though his tone was polite, it was full of nonchalance. The Fatty glanced at Jiang Cheng and Su Xiaoxiao but noticed that neither of them had any special expressions on their faces, as if they had already predicted that Chen Ran would leave.
The Fatty suddenly realized the problem—it was that old woman!
The doctor had warned him to be careful of her, though he didn't say why. But the Fatty suddenly remembered something the old woman had said during her madness.
She said that everyone was still alive, that no one had died, and that they all lived inside her body.
Inside her body!!
He suddenly lifted his head, his mind racing back to the time he had been alone in the room with that old woman, but the bizarre disappearance of the biker woman.
"Everyone," Chen Ran smiled. "Now let's go up together. If anything similar happens inside…"
He paused, helplessly shrugging his hands. "I'm afraid we'll have to take some necessary measures."
