Heart racing

I sat on the edge of the bed, my back to him.

My hands trembled as I slid the key from my pocket, careful to keep it hidden in my palm.

With a quick, discreet movement, I dropped it onto the floor and nudged it under the bed with my foot.

"Maria," Bruno said, his tone impatient.

I turned slightly, forcing a small smile.

"I'm just…getting comfortable."

He didn't respond, but I felt his gaze on me as I lay down beside him, careful to keep a slight distance.

The tension in the room was suffocating. Bruno shifted slightly, the mattress dipping under his weight.

My heart pounded as I stared at the ceiling, every nerve in my body on edge.

"You're tense," he said after a moment, his voice softer than I expected.

"I'm just…not used to this," I replied, keeping my tone neutral.

Bruno let out a low hum, as if contemplating my words.

"You don't have to be afraid of me, Maria," he said quietly.
