Chapter 22: A New Burden
The crisp air did little to clear Darren's mind. Emerging from the Abyssal Labyrinth felt surreal, like waking from a nightmare. But the weight of his ordeal was still very real—the corruption within him had not vanished. The whispers of the Abyss were quieter now, subdued after the battle with the Abyssal Guardian, but they still lingered, just beneath the surface.Captain Hwang approached, his face filled with both relief and concern. "You did it," he said, his voice steady, though his eyes betrayed his confusion. "You survived. But… you don't look the same."Darren looked down at his hands. The dark veins of Abyssal energy still pulsed faintly beneath his skin. He wasn't the same. The light from his mother's pendant had kept the worst of the corruption at bay, but the power he had absorbed was part of him now. He was no longer just Darren Kim, the F-Rank Hunter. He was something else—something more dangerous."I… I don't know what I am anymore," Darren muttered, his voice hollow. He felt a strange disconnect, as if the Abyss had taken a part of his soul and replaced it with something darker.Hwang frowned. "The Labyrinth changes people. But you're still here, still standing. That counts for something. The Association will want answers, Darren. You're not just an F-Rank anymore, are you?"Darren shook his head, unsure of how to respond. He didn't feel stronger in the traditional sense, but the Abyssal power inside him was undeniable. And now that it was part of him, he could never go back to the weak hunter he once was."I'm not sure what I am," Darren admitted finally, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I know one thing—the Abyss isn't done with me yet."
