Chapter 29: The Choice

**Chapter 29: The Choice**

The air in the Hunter Association's boardroom was tense. Darren sat at the long table, his hands clenched into fists as he waited for the inevitable. He had been summoned to this private meeting with little explanation, but he could sense the weight of what was to come. The higher-ups sat across from him, their expressions unreadable, though their eyes betrayed a mix of caution and curiosity. Director Seo was the only one who seemed calm, his sharp gaze locked on Darren.

"You've made quite the impression," Seo began, his voice even. "Not only by surviving the Abyssal Labyrinth but by the power you've gained—or should I say, the power you've *absorbed*."

Darren didn't respond. He knew where this was going. They didn't trust him. How could they? He barely trusted himself these days.

"We've observed you, Darren," Seo continued, leaning forward slightly. "The Abyssal energy inside you is growing. Your abilities have increased, yes, but the danger has as well. We can't ignore the risk."

Darren's heart pounded. He had feared this moment—the moment where they would see him as a threat, not an ally. "What are you saying?" he asked, his voice steady despite the storm brewing inside him.

Seo exchanged a glance with the other officials before speaking again. "The Abyssal power is dangerous. It's corrupting you, even if you've been able to keep it under control so far. But we both know it's only a matter of time before it overwhelms you. That's why we need you to make a choice."

Darren raised an eyebrow, his pulse quickening. "What choice?"

Seo folded his hands on the table. "We can help you—contain the corruption, suppress it. We have ancient techniques, methods that might keep the Abyss at bay. But it comes at a price."

Darren felt a chill run down his spine. "What price?"

The director's gaze hardened. "You would lose access to most of the power you've gained. We can't allow you to walk around with that level of corruption unchecked. You would be monitored, your activities restricted. But it's the only way to ensure you remain in control."

Darren stared at the table, his thoughts racing. They were offering him a lifeline, a way to keep the Abyss from consuming him. But it would mean sacrificing everything he had gained—the power that had saved him in the Labyrinth, the strength that allowed him to survive.

"And if I refuse?" Darren asked, though he already knew the answer.

Seo's expression didn't change. "Then you will be deemed a liability. And we'll have no choice but to act accordingly."

Darren's chest tightened. The unspoken threat hung heavy in the air. They would neutralize him—imprison him, or worse, if they couldn't control the risk he posed.

For a moment, Darren was silent, the weight of the decision pressing down on him. The whispers in his mind grew louder, the Abyss tempting him with promises of power and freedom. He could feel the darkness within him stir, eager to be unleashed.

But then he thought of the pendant around his neck, the light it had given him when all seemed lost. There was still something worth fighting for—his humanity, the part of him that hadn't been consumed by the Abyss.

"I… need time," Darren said finally, his voice barely above a whisper.

Seo's gaze softened slightly. "You have until tomorrow. After that, we will need your answer."

Darren nodded, rising from his seat. As he turned to leave, Seo's voice stopped him.

"Remember, Darren—once you choose, there's no going back."

Darren walked out of the room, his mind in turmoil. The choice was clear, but the cost was far greater than he had ever imagined. The Abyss was calling to him, louder than ever before, but the light from his pendant flickered, reminding him of the life he still had to protect.

Tomorrow, he would make his decision. And no matter what, the path ahead would change everything.
