Chapter 17: Fever Dream

Nadia's POV

Something wasn't right.

My brain was foggy, and my eyes didn't want to open. Yet, in the back of my mind, I seemed to realize something had woken me up. Yet what was it…

As if on autopilot, my hand reached out and grabbed the phone off of the nightstand, swiped on the little circle, and the noise that I hadn't registered ceased. I pressed the phone to my ear.

"'Lo?" I said, my voice barely cracking out.

"Nadia?" my mother's shrill tone came through the receiver, seeming to jerk me awake. "My goodness, are you still not up?"

"No, I-" my mouth fumbled for the words.

"Well, I need you to get up," she continued, unbothered. "Aiden and I left early this morning to go on a trip, and I need you to look after Jasper. As well as Ethan and Mason while you are at it. Thanks! See you when we get back!"
