DARIUS POV
"How did they manage to get past our border without us knowing?!" I yelled at Lucian as he handed me my sword.
"The guards at the border were killed before they could raise the alarm," he replied, as calm and composed as ever, but I wasn't having any of that.
"All the guards couldn't have been killed before they could have rang the alarm," I said. "At least one of the idiots could have escaped and rang the goddamn alarm! What type of fools are you posting at the border, Lucian? Is your job too much that you can't station capable guards?"
I knew it wasn't fair, it wasn't Lucian's fault. But I was so fucking furious. We haven't had a rogue attack in years.
Why are they starting now? How the hell did they manage to breach my fucking border?
Rogues didn't need a lot of reason to attack. Those fools didn't even reason. All they needed was blood and violence. They no longer had the humility to reason, they only think like animals.
Lucian clenched his jaw as he fastened his armors to his chest. Fucking Lucian. Wearing armor like a goddamn knight.
"Apologies, Alpha," he said, his voice tight. "In the future, I'll station more capable guards."
"Good." I turned to strip my gun and dagger on me but paused when I couldn't find my golden dagger. Right. Ravenna has it.
I immediately cleared Ravenna from my thoughts as soon as she entered. She was a distraction I didn't need right now.
"I will say this like the countless times I've said it before: wear armor," Lucian said, fixing a hard glare on me.
"And I will reply like I've replied countless times before: hell. No."
"It's for you—"
"Spare me the same talk, Lucian, and let's go fucking defend our home." I walked out of my room, dressed in my suit, and my sword in one hand.
I didn't need any goddamn armor: I was untouchable. Although recent events with Revanna had proven I wasn't as untouchable as I thought I was. But these were just mere rogues. And nobody could touch me except Revanna. I wouldn't allow it.
And now that she has finally pushed herself into my thoughts I couldn't push her out. The rejection earlier had stung. But I had seen that coming.
What was I expecting? That she would overlook all I've done and just accept me? Villains like me don't get the princesses, even though that princess was my…
"Send a guard to Revanna's room," I told Lucian as we walked out of the house with my pack behind me. "And tell him to make sure she doesn't leave the room no matter what. Send two actually,"
Lucian nodded and went off to do just that. I turned to the pack and they stopped walking and all waited for me.
"Half of you, shift," I addressed them. "The remaining half you fight with me with your weapons."
The pack split in two, half surging forward with me, the rest shifting. We were headed towards the last known location of the rogues.
"How many?" I asked Lucian once he was back at my side.
"A lot."
A huge number of rouges working together? Maybe there was a bit of humility in those animals' heads after all.
The fight was visible even from a distance. Part of our pack had arrived first, holding the rogues at bay, but the rogues were gaining ground. We had arrived just in time.
"Attack!" I bellowed and my pack charged into the fight.
The night erupted into chaos as the rogue wolves descended upon my pack, their eyes glinting with malice.
The air was thick with the stench of fur and blood, punctuated by the frantic yelps of my packmates.
With a fierce roar, a massive rogue lunged at me, teeth bared. I sidestepped, feeling the rush of air as the wolf barely missed me.
In one fluid motion, I swung my sword, the blade biting deep into the creature's flank. Blood sprayed in a dark arc, soaking the ground beneath me. The wolf let out a pained howl before collapsing, its body twitching in the throes of death.
I barely had a moment to breathe. I turned, my gun raised, and fired into the snarling pack closing in around me.
The shot rang out like thunder, and one wolf dropped, a smoking hole in its skull. But more surged forward, their eyes wild with hunger and rage.
My heart raced as adrenaline pumped my blood hot as wolves fell where I passed.
This was what I was made for. I lived for this, for this violence, the blood, the screams as they fell to my blade.
This was what he had made me into, and this was what I am.
I felt the weight of my pack behind me. They were holding their ground, but the rogues were relentless. A smaller wolf darted in, snapping at my leg.
I brought my sword down hard, the blade slicing through the creature's neck. It fell, twitching, as blood pooled around it, a crimson stain on the earth.
"Push them back!" I roared, adrenaline flooding my veins. I reloaded his gun, the metallic click echoing in the night, and fired again, the bullet tearing through the skull of another rogue.
The sound of gunfire mingled with the snarls and growls of battle, creating a symphony of violence. A goddamn beautiful symphony.
I felt the heat of breath on my neck and turned just in time to see a massive wolf charging me.
I barely dodged the jaws that snapped at me, rolling to the side and coming up on one knee. In a desperate move, I fired point-blank into its side but that didn't stop the beast from advancing.
I raised my sword but didn't get the chance to kill the wolf. It dropped dead as a sword pierced its skull.
I raised my gaze and my eyes met beautiful gray ones. "What the hell are you doing here?!" I shouted, stepping across the wolf.
"Dancing, Darius," Revanna replied as she cut down a wolf that had lunged for her. And then she turned to me and gave me that beautiful hard glare that had my heart beating madly. "What the hell does it look like I'm doing?"
"You're supposed to be in your room," I gritted through clenched teeth.
She rolled her eyes. "Ah, yes. Like a princess in a tower waiting for her King Arthur to fight for her."
God, she was beautiful and she was driving me insane.
"You're covered in blood," Revanna said with her lips curled up in disgust.
"Forgive me, my lady. Guess I didn't get the 'dress appropriately for battle' memo," I shot back, wiping my sword on the grass. "I'll be sure to wear something less... festive next time."
Revanna rolled her eyes again and turned to walk where the fight was still ongoing. I don't think her poor eyes will be able to stay in their sockets if she keeps rolling them like that.
Something flashed in the corner of my eyes, and I turned to see a wolf racing to Revanna. Before I could open my mouth to warn her she had already turned and the wolf was lying lifeless on the ground.
Revanna raised her head to me and I could have sworn her eyes flashed silver.
