DARIUS POV
I wanted to drag this Dalian away from my mate. Him holding her filled my tongue with the bitter taste of jealousy, and tightened my chest to the brutal feeling of possessiveness.
I wanted to be the one holding her, confronting her while she broke down. I wanted to be the one kissing her hair, whispering words to her.
Even though this man claimed to be my woman's brother I still wanted to kill him for touching her. Nobody should touch my mate but me. My wolf seemed to agree with that because he was becoming restless, already rising to the edge.
I felt a small, warm hand on my arm but I still didn't look away from Ravenna.
"Come on, big guy," Mia said softly. "Give them space. They both need it."
I clenched my jaw so hard I could hear my teeth grounding. "No."
"Don't be like that, Darius," she persisted. "She had just found out that she has a family out there. She has a grandmother who loves her and a twin who came for her. Don't you think she'll need time to be with him?"
When I remained silent Mia continued. "He's her brother, Darius. Her blood."
Dalian raised his head at that moment and his eyes met mine. There was a plea in those familiar eyes that I couldn't ignore.
I turned around and left the room, Lucian and Mia following behind, closing the door behind them.
We walked to the next room and that was where we sat in silence. Until Mia spoke. "Do you think she'll leave us?"
I almost shot out of the chair but I forced myself to remain still. "Like hell, she will," I grumbled.
Mia gave me a look I had never seen on her before. "Push aside your own selfishness for once, Darius," she snapped, her voice hard, "and ask yourself what she'll want. I'll repeat this: she just found her real family, her tribe. Don't you think she'll want to meet them? Don't you think that maybe, just maybe, she'll want to see her grandmother who has a room for her in her home?"
Anger was beginning to rise in my chest, and along with that was panic. Would Ravenna want to leave me? Now that she's found her people, would she no longer want to be with me? Even though we were mated she could still leave if she wanted, but it'll be torture for the both of us.
I pinned Mia with a look of my own and said, "I won't let her go."
Mia shot out of her chair and stood in front of me, her eyes burning with rage, her chest heaving. "Think for anybody but yourself for once!" she yelled. "Think of what Ravenna would want. Don't be that guy, Darius."
My fist tightened around the arms of the chair. "I've been thinking about Ravenna since she came here," I said, my voice cold. "I've put my selfishness aside and have been thinking for her."
"Is that what you tell yourself to make you sleep at night?" Mia sneered harshly. "Well I hate to burst that bubble, Darius, but that's not the reality. From the day Ravenna came here you've thought against her. Should we start with the fact that you captured her and brought her here? Oh! Or should we start with that stupid game that you started because your male ego was hurt? Or wha–"
I shot out of my chair so fast that Mia stubbled back but caught herself. She raised her head to look at me, her eyes burning.
"Remember your place, Mia," I growled. "You don't speak to your alpha like that."
A cruel smile curved her lips. "I've hit a nerve and now you want to pull ranks, huh? That's a new low, Darius."
I took a step closer. "I won–"
"Kids, kids," Lucian cut in, drawing our attention to where he was seated lazily. He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. He looked at Mia. "First of all, Mia, what made you think Ravenna would want to leave?"
"I was just saying just in case she would want to leave." She shot me a look. "She shouldn't have that fight with Darius. She's been through enough already."
Lucian nodded. "Reasonable." He turned to me. "And why wouldn't you let her go?"
"Because she's my mate."
Lucian rolled his eyes. "Reasonable as always." He stood up and walked to us. "There's a way we can go around this without the both of you arguing like senseless kids. If Ravenna wants to go see her family she will."
I glared at him. "Like hell s–"
"If you could let me finish Darius, you'll see where I'm going with this," he said calmly. I grunted and he took that as his sign to continue. "Clearly Ravenna is attached to you. I mean you're mates after all. So she would want to see her family and she would also want to be with her mate as well. And so if she goes she'll only stay for a short while and come back. Or if you're like a toddler that can't part with his candy you can follow her and come back after a while. That's even better because then you can watch her and protect her. Choose either of those two options and life will go on."
And with that he turned and strode out of the room, whistling a tone.
When he was gone I looked back at Mia to see her looking back at me.
"He's not wrong," she said.
"No, he's not."
"So which are you choosing?"
"It should be obvious."
She nodded. "The second option."
"Yeah."
"I'm coming with."
"Sure."
Mia looked away and a beat of silence passed before she sighed and said, "I'm sorry, Darius. I didn't mean those things I said."
"Yeah, you did."
She huffed. "Ok, fine. I did."
A small smile tugged on my lips.
"It's just that…" She huffed out a breath. "Haven't you thought that this whole thing is overwhelming for Ravenna and she might need a little space?"
"I have." I had given everything serious thought. She had just shifted, had found out that her captor and the man who killed her friend was her mate, had found out that she was a Lupinarian and there were chances that she could be killed by power-hungry bastards, and then she had mated with me and was now preparing to be a luna.
Yes, things were overwhelming for her. I had given it much thought and I had found a solution to make those things less overwhelming for her. A solution that would have eased the weight she was carrying, even though just by a little.
I knew she wouldn't have told me about that weight, because my Ravenna was just like that. So I was planning to take off that weight for her.
"Do you think I should shift the ceremony?" I asked softly.
"No," Mia answered without hesitation. "She doesn't want that."
I nodded. "Then I know what I'm going to do."
