Ross met his gaze without hesitation. "That won't happen. I love your daughter. In fact, I'm planning to marry her by the end of this year."

The room fell silent once more. Her mother's hand froze mid-motion, her brothers exchanged glances, and Faith's father—who had been bracing himself for a fight—suddenly looked as if the wind had been knocked out of him.

For a long moment, he said nothing. Then, unexpectedly, his eyes welled with tears. He turned away slightly, as if embarrassed, and let out a heavy sigh. "Damn time," he muttered. "It moves too fast."

Faith bit her lip, her expression softening. "Dad…"

Her father took a deep breath, then wiped at his face with the back of his hand. He straightened up and forced a smirk. "Alright, enough of this sentimental crap. More wine!"

The drinking feast resumed, this time with even more enthusiasm. Faith's brothers, while still a little wary, warmed up to Ross as the night went on.
