I grew numb to it all

"What are you doing?" Clarissa asked. "Why are you asking me this?"

"It's because I can remember the years so clearly, and as for what I ate... Nothing. I didn't have anything to eat this time last year or two years ago for that matter."

Clarissa's eyes widened. What was she talking about? She was confused.

"You see, having evening meals was a bliss that we could not afford, and when we did have it, I can tell you it wasn't anything short of moldy bread and tasteless soup." She darted her eyes away slowly.

"I can still remember the feelings of having to gulp down hard bread after a long day of tedious work. After having to get my hands dirty and watch others eat warm and healthy meals." She said. "It scraped my throat sometimes but who could I cry to? I was just grateful I could get something in my stomach, you see."

She laughed and looked back at Clarissa.
