"Isn't this odd? How is the Transmission Hall so huge?" Long Xiao exclaimed as he entered, gazing upward. "Is this the sky or the ground?"
Chen Shijie explained, "The Transmission Hall contains a unique world within. This phrase is meant to be taken literally. It's constructed using ninety-nine fragments of cave-heavens."
"From the outside, it doesn't appear large, but the space on the first floor alone is bigger than the city of Gucheng."
Long Xiao marveled, "As expected from the grand style of an ancient divine sect."
Zhao Xing shook his head, saying, "This was established only after the Lihuo Sect joined the Great Zhou, constructed with ninety-nine fragments of cave-heavens and with the participation of over a hundred thousand mechanists. It was overseen by the Grand Engineer 'Huang Jian' during the Taizu era."
"So, it has nothing to do with divine sects. It was purely a national project. Back during the Lihuo Sect's time, they might not have even been able to gather enough people to build it."
"Who are you to dare to criticize the ancient divine sect?" At that moment, a middle-aged man in a yellow robe, walking past, looked over with displeasure.
Zhao Xing looked back, noting the man's old-fashioned attire and the floating dust in his hand as he stared at Zhao Xing with a look of displeasure.
"Did he say anything incorrect?" Long Xiao asked, curious.
The man in the yellow robe snorted, "It is true that the Grand Engineer Huang Jian oversaw the Transmission Hall project during the Taizu era. However, the materials used—the cave-heaven fragments—originated from the Lihuo Sect."
"Eighteen thousand seven hundred and forty-five people participated in its construction, with over thirty-one thousand disciples from the Lihuo Sect."
"Before the establishment of the Great Zhou, the Lihuo Sect was already the state religion of the 'Southern Tang.' It trained disciples numbering in the millions. How could you say the divine sect lacked sufficient personnel?"
"I stand corrected." Zhao Xing quickly clasped his hands in respect. "I am young and inexperienced; please forgive my ignorance, Senior."
The man, who seemed to be a staunch traditionalist, returned the salute and then snorted, "In the future, remember to speak cautiously and avoid careless comments about the divine sect."
"Yes." Zhao Xing maintained a modest and respectful demeanor as he promptly took Long Xiao and Chen Shijie away.
"That Daoist gave me a strange feeling," Long Xiao noted, glancing back in the direction the man had left. "Oh, I remember now! His manners and behavior remind me of those outsiders we encountered in the Southern Wastelands. Old Chen, don't you think so?"
Chen Shijie nodded, "Indeed."
Zhao Xing whispered, "The Seventy-Two Dao Academies originated from sects. It's natural for you to feel that way."
"That man likely belongs to a more traditionalist faction."
Long Xiao asked, "What do you mean?"
Using a transmission technique so only the three of them could hear, Zhao Xing explained, "The integration of the seventy-two sects into the Great Zhou's Fortune Dynasty system was not entirely smooth."
"A period of intense turbulence ensued, leading to three kinds of responses among the sects."
"First were those who aligned themselves with the prevailing trends. They swiftly accepted reality, integrated into the Great Zhou, became deans of the Dao Academies, and abandoned old laws and rules."
"Second were the die-hard traditionalists. This group of power-holders was accustomed to having life and death at their command. They couldn't accept the strict laws of the Great Zhou, so during that turbulent period, some of them split off, others defected, and they left the Great Zhou territories with their disciples."
"Third, we had a portion of the elders and guardians. While they obeyed orders from various sect leaders and joined the Great Zhou, their behavior and ideological concepts remained traditional. They simply didn't wish to leave the nineteen provinces."
"They weren't as extreme, appearing to follow the Great Zhou's laws and accepting the cultivation restrictions set by the Fortune Dynasty on the surface."
"However, deep down, they adhered to the old traditions of their sects."
Long Xiao continued with the voice transmission, "What sort of traditions do these sects have?"
Chen Shijie replied, "For instance, the practice of ascetic cultivation. I once saw a group of Dao Academy experts on Ming Mountain. They would abstain from eating, drinking, or sleeping for prolonged periods, sitting in meditation on the mountain peaks."
"Sometimes for months, sometimes a whole year, relying only on their inner energy and rainwater for sustenance."
"These people push themselves to the brink of death. There have even been cases of ascetic cultivators who starved themselves to death."
Zhao Xing nodded, "Then there's the tradition of transmitting skills. Many sect elders will not reveal their ultimate techniques. If they can't find disciples willing to follow the old rules for apprenticeship, they'd rather take those techniques to the grave."
"During the reigns of the Taizu and Emperor Wen, numerous incidents occurred across various Dao Academies where teachers killed students."
Long Xiao was shocked, "Why would they kill students?"
Zhao Xing explained, "Many students would study techniques from one teacher, then go to another teacher the next day for more."
"Such behavior was seen as a betrayal, and many senior members could not tolerate it. Some even crippled their disciples' cultivation."
"In extreme cases, when they couldn't control their rage, they broke through the Fortune protection granted to Daoists by the Great Zhou. Many Daoists fell from their cultivation realm and even died."
"There were cases where traditionalist sect elders killed students simply because the disciple didn't perform morning and evening greetings."
Long Xiao was taken aback, "Killed for not greeting their master in the morning and evening?"
"Utterly ridiculous!" he exclaimed.
"It truly is absurd," Chen Shijie agreed. "Fortunately, Emperor Wen was merciful and didn't take extreme measures against these stubborn old men."
"His policy was to place members of the imperial family into the Dao Academies. After completing their training, they would gradually replace these obstinate individuals."
"Over a thousand years, changes have transformed the Seventy-Two Dao Academies. The positions of dean and vice-dean are now mostly filled by members of the royal family."
"True," Zhao Xing nodded. "For instance, Princess You Ruo's mother was once the sect leader of the Bishui Sect (now the dean). After having Princess You Ruo, the princess herself held an honorary vice-dean title."
"If nothing unexpected happens, this position would naturally pass to Princess You Ruo upon her mother's passing."
"But the old lady ultimately gave up this position and agreed to a political marriage with the Holy Light Royal Court of the Southern Wastelands. Who knows what she was thinking?"
Long Xiao inquired, "Did your teacher, Liu Tianning, ever confront people from these traditionalist factions?"
"Not merely a confrontation—he killed them," Zhao Xing said. "The most brutal contests among Dao Academies are known as the 'Dao Path Struggles.'"
"In these contests, not only do they determine superiority, but they also determine life and death. Advancing by stepping over others is common in ancient sects."
"The Taizu was fond of battle, so he preserved this tradition. During Emperor Wen's reign, it was temporarily abolished."
"But later, it was reinstated. The current emperor is particularly fond of it and has personally participated in seven 'Dao Path Struggles.'"
"Oh?" Long Xiao asked. "Even the emperor participated?"
"Yes," Zhao Xing replied. "In the first six contests, he killed thirty-seven vice-deans across six Dao Academies. As for the reason… well, you can guess."
"I can't," Long Xiao replied earnestly.
Zhao Xing chuckled, "As I mentioned earlier, those old fogies were reluctant to teach their techniques. Since they wanted to take their secrets to the grave, the emperor decided to send them off sooner."
"I see," Long Xiao said, "What about the seventh? What happened in that one?"
Zhao Xing shrugged, "After the seventh struggle, the Bishui Sect's leader entered the imperial harem, and Princess You Ruo was born."
"That's… something."
"…"
The three of them continued chatting as they explored the first floor.
The majority on the first floor were in the Ninth-Rank Essence Gathering Stage and the Eighth-Rank Spirit Bridge Stage.
Walls of spells were scattered around, towering high with plenty of space, enough for people to experiment.
Zhao Xing noted that these walls were categorized into different sections.
For instance, they were categorized by profession: martial skills, spell techniques, music techniques, soul techniques (referring specifically to shamanic skills, not commonly known soul-cultivating techniques), dance techniques, and formation techniques.
Or by the Five Elements and the wind and thunder categories.
As one of the significant cultivation paths, the Shennong's Way naturally had its own dedicated section.
"Seasonal Qi Command and the Reversion to the Earth's Origins Secret Canon… techniques developed from these are weak," Chen Shijie remarked. "The first floor is only good for browsing."
"Indeed," Zhao Xing agreed, "There aren't even any techniques from the Self School here. There are hardly any individuals at the Eighth and Ninth Ranks who study the Diagram of All Things Growth or the Yin-Yang Self Canon."
"The first ten floors don't offer much. Let's skip to the eleventh floor," Long Xiao scoffed. "The martial techniques here are so crude."
"Dao Academy students will do anything to graduate," he added.
"Some students just alter the opening move of a sword technique, and it still counts as passing. It's truly amazing."
"…"
Exchanging silent glances, Zhao Xing, Chen Shijie, and Long Xiao ascended the cloud ladder.
In the spaces between the floors, "cloud ladders" connected the heavens and earth, moving up and down like a magical version of elevators.
Using the cloud ladder, they ascended to the tenth floor.
By the time they aimed for the eleventh floor, the cloud ladder was no longer available, so they had to rely on their own flying abilities.
The Dao Academy used this method to restrict lower-realm students from venturing to higher floors, preventing them from seeing powerful techniques and martial skills that might lead them astray.
There were many individuals like Feng Qiu, who focused intensely on a single path, leading them to dead ends. Those unable to fly could only linger within the first ten floors.
From the eleventh floor onward, numerous mid-level techniques and martial skills appeared.
The three lingered longer here, intrigued by the mid-level techniques, many of which were new to them.
By observing these fresh techniques, they could gain insight into others' interpretations of Dao, which could then reinforce their own understanding.
Eight hours later, Zhao Xing and his companions had reached the thirtieth floor.
At this level, they encountered a test.
At the border between the thirtieth and thirty-first floors, a guardian was present.
And this guardian turned out to be none other than the yellow-robed Daoist they'd encountered on the first floor.
Not only did he serve as a gatekeeper, but he was also a lecturer, with a crowd gathering to listen to his teachings.
"Hey, who is that gentleman?" Long Xiao asked a nearby middle-aged man.
The man glanced at Long Xiao, noticed his remarkable presence, and respectfully replied, "He is a scholar of our academy, known as Master Daoming."
"Master Daoming is currently teaching the Lihuo Canon. He specializes in this scripture."
Fearing that Long Xiao, an outsider, wouldn't grasp its significance, the man lowered his voice, "Among the countless Dao scriptures in the world, the Lihuo Canon ranks among the top ten. Only the most brilliant can master it."
"Master Daoming has only just emerged from seclusion and has come here to impart his teachings. A hundred years ago, he had already achieved perfection in the Soul Essence Stage, fully mastering the Lihuo Body."
Long Xiao was astonished. To have achieved the Fourth-Rank pinnacle a century ago—he might well be in the Third-Rank Soul Realm by now!
Earlier, he had claimed that there were no high-level cultivators to be seen, yet here was one right before him.
"Outsiders seeking entry to the thirty-first floor must first obtain the title of Honorary Master of a Hundred Arts," Zhao Xing said, standing by a stone tablet bearing this requirement.
"To become an Honorary Master of a Hundred Arts, one must create a new mid-level technique."
Zhao Xing gestured for his companions to follow, "Let's quickly find a spell wall and complete the test."
"Agreed."
The three of them approached a spell wall.
Buzz~
A faint blue light emanated from the wall, illuminating an area around it.
To pass the test, they needed to demonstrate their new techniques within this area. If they met the requirements, their technique would be recorded on the wall.
To become a Master of a Hundred Arts within the Dao Academy, one didn't need to create new techniques, just be proficient in many.
"As an Honorary Master of a Hundred Arts, one must create a new mid-level technique that reaches the stage of complete mastery."
"Only when a technique achieves mid-level perfection can future practitioners grasp its essence."
"If it's incomplete—say it only reaches seven transformations—then due to its flaws, others might only comprehend it up to four or five transformations," Zhao Xing explained as he reviewed the requirements.
Only techniques at the complete mastery level were considered whole, although this was from the perspective of mid-level techniques. To experts, mid-level Dao techniques would still have many imperfections.
Even the creators of high-level techniques couldn't claim theirs were flawless.
Only ultimate techniques could be called complete Dao.
In the Fortune Dynasty era, any practitioner studying ultimate techniques could neither add nor subtract a single bit, as the path of the Dao reached its limit with "ultimate techniques," unable to advance any further.
Sizzle~
Lightning arced from Zhao Xing's fingertips.
He now demonstrated a mid-level technique he had created long ago, incorporating the "Thunder Bind" and "Thunder Palm" techniques.
Later, he elevated this into the high-level technique known as the Thunder Breaking Delusion Finger.
Zhao Xing intended to use this thunder technique to earn the title of Honorary Master.
Boom!
The "Thunder Bind" materialized and struck the wall.
The strength of the technique was being tested.
In terms of sheer power, Yang Thunder would be more potent, but "Thunder Bind" utilized Yin Thunder.
Both techniques were at mid-level complete mastery, so Zhao Xing could have chosen either—he simply preferred "Thunder Bind."
Buzz~
The spell wall flashed rapidly ten times.
Each flash represented a transformation.
After reaching nine transformations and flashing once more, it signified the attainment of mid-level complete mastery.
Buzz~
The wall emitted a bright red token.
"A mid-level Lihuo Token," Zhao Xing said with a slight smile. This token served as proof of his qualification.
For now, he only needed to obtain the token; afterward, he would still need to register his personal information.
Each person was allowed one token. It was non-transferable, and if caught loaning it to someone else, they would permanently lose their qualification to access the Lihuo Dao Academy.
Swish!
Boom!
With a flash of sword light and a rumble, the other two spell walls in front of Long Xiao and Chen Shijie also issued the hundred arts tokens.
The three of them passed the test on the first try.
Their swift success attracted attention.
Creating a new technique that reached mid-level complete mastery was no easy feat.
Most Sixth-Ranks couldn't achieve it, as they were just reaching the threshold for high-level techniques.
Many Sixth-Ranks still relied on mid-level techniques, so creating one was even more challenging.
Seeing the three of them pass in a single attempt naturally drew people's curiosity.
"Who are those three?"
"No idea. They seem to be outsiders."
"Judging by their attire, they're likely military personnel."
"Hmm? That big guy is actually a sword cultivator?!"
"A sword cultivator creating his own technique?"
"Let's go take a look!"
Two of them being Shennong cultivators wasn't particularly surprising, as Shennong practitioners weren't that rare.
However, a sword cultivator was almost like a rare treasure.
Many people gathered under Long Xiao's spell wall to study his technique, and some even approached him for conversation.
At first, Long Xiao thought of putting on an act, especially since several female disciples approached him.
The ladies here in the Dao Academy carried a certain allure, more refined than the girls at Huixiang Tower.
But Zhao Xing and Chen Shijie both glared at him, and Long Xiao immediately backed down.
He rose on his sword, following his companions to the boundary between floors.
At that moment, Master Daoming was in the middle of his lecture.
Seeing Zhao Xing and the others approach, he glanced up.
Three prodigies who had each created mid-level techniques—impressive.
"Master Daoming, we've obtained the qualification of Honorary Masters of a Hundred Arts. May we proceed?" Chen Shijie stepped forward and addressed him politely.
Master Daoming gave the trio a scrutinizing look, his gaze lingering on Zhao Xing for a moment before nodding, "Go ahead."
"Thank you." Chen Shijie clasped his hands in gratitude, and the three ascended to the thirty-first floor.
"Why do I feel like that old man was looking at me with hostility, as though he recognized me?" Zhao Xing mused, his sharp intuition detecting something amiss.
His Fate Soul had reached the Fifth-Rank late stage!
Back at the Extreme Night Sea, after his breakthrough, he continued consuming Yin-Yang Fish until he was satisfied, reaching the Fifth-Rank late stage with his Fate Soul.
Ordinarily, having a Fate Soul realm above one's physical body level was detrimental to cultivation, as it created an imbalance of Yin over Yang.
But Zhao Xing's Straw Puppet techniques and his Great Dream Spring and Autumn technique helped balance his Fate Soul. Combined with his Dragon Soul Jade and Soul Armor, this imbalance turned from a weakness into a strength.
Master Daoming had lingered on Zhao Xing for a moment because he sensed the unusual strength of his Fate Soul.
"A Sixth-Rank Shennong with such a powerful Fate Soul, and there seems to be a potent spiritual plant residing within his right hand."
"A parasitic spiritual plant… Could he be a disciple of a Self School Shennong?"
Master Daoming abruptly halted his lecture, announcing that he would end it for the day.
Zhao Xing's appearance had stirred unpleasant memories within him.
Years ago, a similar Shennong cultivator—at the Fifth-Rank with a Fourth-Rank Fate Soul—had wielded the rare "Myriad Straw Puppet," nurturing several spiritual plants within his body.
One of those plants bore a resemblance to what he had just sensed in Zhao Xing.
"Liu Tianning…" Master Daoming muttered to himself. "Could this young man be Liu Tianning's disciple?"
Upon reaching the thirty-first floor, Zhao Xing used his Five-Finger Fate Technique, his brow immediately furrowing.
"Old Chen, Long Xiao, let's wrap this up quickly."
"What's wrong?" Long Xiao drew his sword.
"I have a feeling trouble is on the horizon," Zhao Xing replied. "And not just any trouble—my identity might have been recognized."
"Are you referring to that scholar from earlier?" Chen Shijie asked.
"Most likely," Zhao Xing responded. "Liu Tianning's distinct traits are easy to recognize. As his disciple, my traits are just as obvious to those in the know."
It wasn't as if just anyone could recognize Zhao Xing as Liu Tianning's disciple with a mere glance.
But Master Daoming was no ordinary figure, and he was a Dao Academy member.
"Alright, let's get this over with," Zhao Xing urged.
The three each chose a spell wall.
The Honorary Transmission Master test also required creating new techniques.
There wasn't much difference between the thirtieth and sixtieth floors.
It was only after the sixtieth floor that the tests for Honorary Scholars would get more rigorous.
Still, there were subtle differences between the floors within the thirtieth-to-sixtieth range.
For instance, the sixtieth floor had additional trials. Passing these would grant an Honorary Transmission Master not only access to the Lihuo Divine Altar but also the ability to borrow resources and manpower from the Lihuo Dao Academy.
Zhao Xing, however, was only interested in securing access to the Lihuo Divine Altar.
His aim was simply to gain the title, nothing more.
Boom!
The Thunder Breaking Delusion Finger he had developed struck the spell wall.
This technique had reached the fourth transformation level during the Ghost Binding battle, later advancing to the eighth transformation stage after a fortuitous encounter at the Cave-Heaven.
This level easily fulfilled the test's requirements.
Buzz~
A new, fiery-red token appeared on the spell wall.
He had obtained the high-level Lihuo Token!
Turning to look at Long Xiao and Chen Shijie, Zhao Xing saw that they too had passed.
Long Xiao had succeeded on the first try.
Chen Shijie took a little longer because he had created an Earth Palace technique.
These types of techniques naturally required more time for validation.
If one were to create a Self School technique, such as the Instant Primordial technique, they would need to summon relevant experts to assess it.
Since the Honorary Transmission Master title held great significance, nothing could be left to chance.
Buzz~
The ground trembled slightly as Chen Shijie finally succeeded on his third attempt.
"Done!"
"Alright, let's get out of here," Zhao Xing urged.
"Yeah," Long Xiao muttered, "We're here to earn an honorary title, but it feels more like we're sneaking around like thieves."
"Stop complaining and hurry up."
The three quickly exited the Transmission Hall and headed to the Lihuo Dao Academy's department for information registration.
"Name?"
"Zhao Xing."
"Place of origin?"
"Gucheng in Nanyang County."
"Official position?"
"Pending promotion to Sixth-Rank official."
After a while, the Daoist managing the registration said, "You may register up to five names here."
He pulled out a yellow registry, a document from the Great Zhou Court used for confirming identity and recording details.
Now that Zhao Xing had passed the Honorary Transmission Master test, he was permitted to bring up to five relatives with him to use the Lihuo Divine Altar.
If a relative came alone, they would be denied access.
Zhao Xing had already prepared the necessary official documents from the Gucheng and Nanyang County administrations, so the process was quick.
After about forty-five minutes, the Daoist handling the paperwork confirmed that everything was complete.
"Done." Zhao Xing smiled with satisfaction.
Now officially an Honorary Transmission Master of the Lihuo Dao Academy, Zhao Xing not only had access to the Lihuo Divine Altar but also some of the academy's internal benefits, such as three free sessions per year for training in fire-based techniques at the Lihuo Tower.
He could even apply for an official position within the academy more easily if he chose to.
Of course, privileges came with responsibilities. Honorary Transmission Masters were required to teach at the academy at least once every three years, with the specifics depending on how many privileges they had enjoyed.
After waiting a bit longer, Long Xiao and Chen Shijie also finished their registrations.
However, when the three stepped out of the registration hall, Zhao Xing's heart sank.
Hundreds of people, all Sixth-Rank cultivators, had gathered in the plaza outside.
Seeing this formation, Zhao Xing immediately understood—he wasn't going to escape Liu Tianning's legacy without some complications.
"Who here is Zhao Xing, personal disciple of Liu Tianning? Step forward to speak!" A man dressed in a blue Daoist robe stepped forward from the crowd, his gaze sweeping over Zhao Xing, Long Xiao, and Chen Shijie.
"Who are you?" Long Xiao asked, "What do you want with Zhao Xing?"
"My name is Jin Qi, Dao name 'Qiming,'" the man said proudly. "I am at the peak of the Sixth-Rank Heavenly Gang Stage, and I studied under Huang Shigong. I presume you've heard the name."
Long Xiao and Chen Shijie turned to Zhao Xing.
"Do you know this 'Huang Shigong'?" they asked.
Zhao Xing shook his head; he genuinely didn't.
He hadn't mentioned his plans to earn Lihuo Dao Academy credentials to Liu Tianning. As for any lingering grudges Liu Tianning might have had, Zhao Xing hadn't asked about them, fearing it might bring up painful memories. But to think that, after a hundred years, Liu Tianning had done something that others still hadn't forgotten.
Jin Qi, seeing their silence, raised his voice again, "Zhao Xing, as Liu Tianning's disciple, you should know this day would come!"
"I, Jin Qi, challenge you to a 'Dao Path Struggle'!"
"You're at the Sixth-Rank pinnacle, and so am I. This is a fair match."
"And I, Yu Fei, also challenge you to a 'Dao Path Struggle'!" another Daoist called out.
"If you have any courage, Zhao Xing, accept my challenge!" shouted a third, Zhang Xing.
"Zhao Xing…"
One by one, dozens stepped forward, all demanding a fight with Zhao Xing.
Hundreds of cultivators surrounded them, all at the Sixth Rank, creating a formidable scene.
Long Xiao and Chen Shijie were stunned by this turn of events. The "Dao Path Struggle" was a duel where life and death weren't accounted for. Were all these people intent on challenging Liu Tianning's disciple?
Did Liu Tianning dig up their ancestors' graves?
Zhao Xing said calmly, "What if I refuse?"
The first to challenge him, Jin Qi, retorted, "Zhao Xing, if you refuse, it may be difficult for you to leave here today."
Zhao Xing was about to respond when a voice descended from above.
"Silence! Do you all think nothing of the Great Zhou's laws?"
A figure descended from the sky, garbed in a violet Daoist robe and crowned with a jade coronet, exuding an air of celestial majesty.
His presence immediately quieted the crowd.
The newcomer was none other than Li Shanhe, a vice-dean of this branch of the Dao Academy.
"Dean."
"Greetings, Dean."
The crowd greeted him with reverence.
Zhao Xing, Long Xiao, and Chen Shijie also bowed respectfully. "Greetings, Dean."
Li Shanhe turned to Zhao Xing, "Zhao Xing, if you do not wish to accept these challenges, you may leave freely. No one will stop you."
"Dean, if he wishes to avoid the battle, he need only admit his fear publicly, declare that Liu Tianning's disciple is too cowardly to face us, and we'll withdraw our challenges."
"Yes, if Liu Tianning's disciple is a coward, we'll pretend we were never here."
"Ha! Coward!"
"Spineless fool! Liu Tianning must have been no better."
"If he's so afraid, why not go pay respects at my master's grave before leaving?"
"Pathetic! If Liu Tianning was a disgrace, so is his disciple!"
"…"
The crowd grew restless, hurling insults and goading Zhao Xing.
It was evident they were trying to provoke him into action, relying on psychological pressure.
Glancing at Li Shanhe, Zhao Xing recognized the ploy. The dean was playing a dual role—one as the "good cop" while the crowd played "bad cop." If Li Shanhe truly intended for Zhao Xing to leave peacefully, he could have dispersed the crowd. Zhao Xing also sensed a few Fourth- and Fifth-Rank cultivators watching from the shadows.
"Dean Li," Zhao Xing began, "as an Honorary Transmission Master of the Lihuo Dao Academy, do you have any advice for me?"
"A new Honorary Transmission Master receiving some challenges is only natural," Li Shanhe said, offering a compromise. "If you wish, you could simply engage in a standard duel instead of a 'Dao Path Struggle.'"
Li Shanhe's suggestion allowed Zhao Xing to accept a formal duel while avoiding a life-and-death struggle.
If Zhao Xing did choose to accept, Li Shanhe would have to ensure Zhao Xing's safety. The head of the academy, Ji Qingshan, had specifically instructed him to protect Zhao Xing should things escalate. Liu Tianning, after all, was no longer a Fifth-Rank cultivator from a hundred years ago; he had now advanced to the Fourth Rank.
Should Zhao Xing be killed in a duel, Liu Tianning would almost certainly retaliate, which would lead to significant trouble for all involved.
However, many among the crowd genuinely sought vengeance. Unable to defeat Liu Tianning, they saw Zhao Xing's arrival as an opportunity for closure.
Li Shanhe had to balance these conflicting interests delicately.
"Very well," Zhao Xing agreed without hesitation. "As Dean Li suggested, I will accept a standard duel."
"But I will fight only once!" Zhao Xing declared, scanning the crowd with a calm expression.
"Whatever my teacher has done, I, Zhao Xing, will bear it today."
"Choose your strongest Sixth-Rank challenger."
The crowd grew even more agitated.
"I'll do it!"
"No, I'll take him!"
"Zhao Xing, accept my challenge!"
"…"
Everyone seemed eager, as many believed themselves to be superior to Zhao Xing, having trained for ten or even several decades longer.
In the Dao Academy, Liu Tianning's name was notorious, and defeating his disciple would be a significant achievement.
Zhao Xing, on the other hand, thought of his future interactions with the Dao Academy and decided not to go as far as his teacher Liu Tianning, who would have left a trail of bodies. He figured that by defeating their strongest representative, the others would back down.
"Zhao Xing, when you say 'strongest Sixth Rank,' do you mean the strongest martial artist, the most skilled spellcaster, or perhaps a Shennong cultivator as your opponent?" Li Shanhe looked up as if consulting someone, seeking to clarify the parameters.
Zhao Xing replied with a slight smile, his voice carrying throughout, "No restrictions."
"Whether they're a martial artist or otherwise, regardless of how many more years they've trained, as long as they're at the Sixth Rank, I accept."
His statement sparked a wave of indignation among the crowd.
To them, Zhao Xing's words suggested he viewed himself as an invincible Sixth-Rank cultivator, dismissing any challenge with blatant confidence.
"Arrogant! Such contempt!"
"A disciple of Liu Tianning indeed. Whether he has the skills remains to be seen, but his self-assurance is identical."
From afar, Master Daoming watched silently. Beside him stood several Daoists whose disciples or junior kin had been casualties of Liu Tianning's "Dao Path Struggles."
"Very well, let him have his way," a wizened elder murmured. Wearing a wine gourd at his hip and faintly encircled by flame-like patterns, he added, "Send in Bai Ming."
The Lihuo Arena was a site dedicated to the sparring and dueling needs of Daoists and instructors alike.
Similar to the Nine Sections Arena in the Military Realm, it was a subcategory within the Arena classification.
Though Zhao Xing had declined the "Dao Path Struggle," the duel still attracted a large audience.
Only those at the teacher level or prodigious Seventh-Rank Daoists were allowed to spectate; those below the Eighth and Ninth Ranks had no such privilege.
"Senior Brother Bai Ming is already ninety-four years old; he'll surely defeat Liu Tianning's disciple."
"Bai Ming has mastered spells across all five elements, each reaching complete mastery in high-level techniques. He's bound to win against Zhao Xing."
"Let Bai Ming go all out and make it a clean victory. Injuries won't matter since they can be healed."
"Hmph, Liu Tianning took so many lives back then, only to be shielded by the Marquis of Luohou. Today, we'll collect interest by teaching his disciple a lesson."
"Zhao Xing may have grasped the Myriad Straw Puppet technique, but it's unlikely he's unlocked its full power."
"Without reaching the Fifth Rank, he can't truly wield the full potential of the Myriad Straw Puppet."
"…"
A group of senior Daoists who harbored grudges against Liu Tianning stood on a high viewing platform, their gaze fixed below.
After a hundred years, they had trained numerous disciples and followers.
When it came to selecting capable Sixth-Rank fighters for the duel, they could choose from a wide array, and Bai Ming was undoubtedly the most formidable among them.
Inside the Lihuo Arena, the atmosphere surged with excitement as Bai Ming took his place on the stage.
"Bai Ming!"
"Invincible Bai Ming!"
"Senior Brother Bai Ming, defeat him!"
The cheering was fierce, though Bai Ming remained unaffected, thanks to the barrier that blocked the sound.
"Look, Zhao Xing is on the stage too."
"Huh? Why are there nine of him?"
"Those must be his Straw Puppet clones… Could it be the Myriad Straw Puppet?"
"Could it really be…?"
The sight of Zhao Xing on the stage with multiple identical figures left many spectators uncertain.
Older onlookers were especially reminded of events from years past.
"It's the Myriad Straw Puppet!" Master Daoming observed with a frown. "And the power of his clones is remarkably strong."
"Bai Ming is no pushover, though," the elder with the wine gourd muttered, his gaze fixated on the arena. "He'll win."
The duel was overseen by Li Shanhe.
Hovering above, he outlined the rules of engagement and then looked at both sides.
"Both of you are Honorary Transmission Masters of the Lihuo Dao Academy. This is a sparring match, so adhere to the arena's rules. Once the victor is clear, you must stop."
"Understood," Bai Ming replied.
Zhao Xing also nodded.
Li Shanhe cast a quick glance at Zhao Xing's clones.
"Begin!"
The moment Li Shanhe declared the start of the match, it was over.
Zhao Xing immediately released a burst of sword energy from one of his Myriad Straw Puppets.
Roar!
The Azure Dragon Sword Qi pierced Bai Ming's chest directly.
Bai Ming had no chance to activate his defensive spells before he fell, a glow surrounding him as he was teleported out of the arena.
"Well fought," Zhao Xing said, then calmly flew off the platform.
Silence.
Complete and utter silence.
The audience seemed frozen in place, like someone had pressed pause.
In their eyes, Bai Ming—whom they considered invincible among Sixth Ranks—had been defeated instantly!
He didn't even have a chance to fight back!
"How… how is this possible?"
"Bai Ming… isn't he the pinnacle of the Sixth Rank?"
"This is unreal! Zhao Xing's clone merely pointed at Senior Brother Bai Ming, and he fell. I didn't even see what happened."
"That was sword energy, powerful sword energy, far beyond the Sixth Rank."
"Cheating! He's cheating!"
"No, it's not cheating. The Guardian Straw Puppet can store a cultivator's sword energy, so this doesn't count as cheating."
"Ah, we've lost."
Jin Qi, the first to challenge Zhao Xing, turned pale.
"If this had been a 'Dao Path Struggle'… If I had been on that stage…"
Jin Qi shuddered at the thought.
He hadn't feared death; he'd simply had confidence in his own skills, which was why he challenged Zhao Xing.
But Bai Ming was stronger than him, and even he had been felled in an instant.
"If it were me, I would've been killed in seconds, utterly defenseless."
High up on the viewing platform, Master Daoming and the others were equally stunned.
"How can his Myriad Straw Puppet retain such strong sword energy?"
"Ridiculous! The Straw Puppet techniques are absurd!" the elder with the wine gourd muttered, visibly frustrated.
Indeed, the Myriad Straw Puppet was an overpowered technique, practically cheating.
If one could even master the Myriad Straw Puppet, they became a formidable presence.
The Myriad Straw Puppet was the "ultimate technique" of the Self School!
"If he can hold Fourth-Rank sword energy within his puppet, that's his skill, not cheating," Master Daoming observed. "Although he is still young, he possesses true strength."
The sword energy within Zhao Xing's clone was none other than the Azure Dragon Sword Qi—Yang An's signature move!
At that level, it would even kill a Fifth-Rank opponent with ease.
"A Fifth-Rank Fate Soul, coupled with the essence of the Myriad Straw Puppet—Zhao Xing can contain Fourth-Rank sword energy. He truly lives up to being Liu Tianning's disciple." Master Daoming thought to himself, "Brother… I fear your revenge is unattainable in this lifetime."
Zhao Xing left the arena, returning to the crowd that had challenged him earlier.
But now, their previous arrogance was nowhere to be seen.
A short while later, a battered Bai Ming was escorted out by others.
"Dean Li, please convey a message to them." Zhao Xing addressed Li Shanhe. "I have no intention of continuing the feuds of the previous generation. Earning the Honorary Transmission Master title at the Lihuo Dao Academy was my way of making peace."
"I hope there won't be a repeat of today's events."
"Otherwise, if my teacher and I join forces, there won't be a Dao Academy left standing with any dignity."
Li Shanhe hesitated, then laughed, "Ha! Well spoken, Marquis Yuanrang. I'll relay your message exactly as you said! But remember, if you'd truly wanted to leave earlier, no one would have stopped you."
"Thank you, Dean Li. I take my leave."
Li Shanhe nodded.
Watching Zhao Xing walk away, he mused, "Liu Tianning truly has a worthy successor."
For Zhao Xing's Myriad Straw Puppet to hold the Azure Dragon Sword Qi, he was, for all practical purposes, invincible.
Even a Fifth-Rank challenger would suffer the same outcome.
To win a "Dao Path Struggle" yet spare the opponent was an impressive display of character.
Li Shanhe himself disapproved of today's conflict. Back then, the Marquis of Luohou had protected Liu Tianning, effectively settling the matter. Some, however, had chosen to reopen old wounds.
Zhao Xing demonstrated both restraint and authority.
His final words had also served as a warning.
At only the Sixth Rank, he had dared to warn high-ranking officials and Dao Academy leaders.
Li Shanhe couldn't help but admire Zhao Xing's boldness.
And he hadn't been wrong in his warning.
If one Liu Tianning was already problematic, what would happen if he and his disciple Zhao Xing—both skilled in the Myriad Straw Puppet technique—joined forces?
Leaving the Lihuo Dao Academy in Dazhou Prefecture, Zhao Xing, Long Xiao, and Chen Shijie didn't return to Gucheng immediately but waited in the capital city for their new military assignments.
Early September, the Orders Arrive, Departing from Ten Sun Cave-Heaven Toward Dayuan Prefecture
When the official orders finally arrived via the military channels, Zhao Xing and his two companions were quickly assigned specific appointments in Dayuan Prefecture, having already established connections with the local authorities.
"Where are you headed?" Chen Shijie asked.
"Purple Cloud Archipelago in the Eastern Sea, Twin Island," Zhao Xing replied, examining the document in his hand. "My position is Left Division Director of the Dragon Horse Directorate. What about you?"
"I'm assigned to Firefly Island, also as the Left Division Director of the Dragon Horse Directorate," Chen Shijie responded.
"Well, it seems we really are going to be horse breeders now!" Zhao Xing laughed.
"Breeding exotic beasts is indeed part of the Shennong duties, but I am actually a Military Shennong," Chen Shijie sighed, a bit exasperated. "I've never raised exotic beasts before."
While animal husbandry is technically a branch of agriculture, the field of Shennong has developed over time into many specialized sub-disciplines, each with its own complex functions.
For someone tasked with animal care, they would ideally have chosen this path early on, as one's energy is limited and no Shennong can master every single discipline within the agricultural arts. It's similar to mechanists, where some focus on city construction, others on building airships, and still others specialize in forging weapons.
This abrupt transfer was like changing professions halfway through one's career. Though it wasn't as difficult as switching entirely unrelated fields, it was still a considerable challenge for Chen Shijie.
"This might as well be exile," he remarked.
"We are being exiled," Zhao Xing replied with a shrug. "Didn't we offend King Liang? If we're being exiled, we ought to look the part."
"Would it be exile if you were given a cushy position instead?"
"You're handling this quite well," Chen Shijie sighed. "But you can adapt to reforms, while I can't. And raising exotic beasts is all about the right feed. Am I really supposed to switch to studying the Self School's classics now?"
Old Chen was a staunch follower of the Earth School, unlike Zhao Xing, who had more flexible allegiances.
Of course, this also reflected the difference in their ambitions. Zhao Xing aspired to become the Grand Shennong. To achieve that, he would need a well-rounded resume, mastering various responsibilities, even if not immediately relevant. This experience would be valuable in the future.
Chen Shijie, however, lacked such lofty ambitions. The idea of becoming the Grand Shennong had never crossed his mind.
"What are you two sulking about?" Long Xiao approached with his own assignment letter in hand. "Quick, help me figure out what position I got."
Zhao Xing took Long Xiao's letter and glanced at it, then said, "You're appointed as the Right Division Director of the Coastal Patrol Department for Purple Cloud Island and Red Stone County. It's still a military position, but not exactly part of the regular military."
"What does that mean?" Long Xiao asked.
"It means you're essentially a local security officer. Think of the Coastal Patrol Department as similar to the Patrol Department, but in charge of sea-related affairs. Your role will primarily involve handling maritime security disputes," Zhao Xing explained.
"So… I'm not part of the navy?" Long Xiao looked bewildered.
"No," Zhao Xing shook his head. "If you were in the navy, you'd hold the position of Military Commander for the Purple Cloud Navy Regiment of the Eastern Sea Corps, rather than Coastal Patrol Director."
"You won't have the authority to deal with major military conflicts, like invasions by marine tribes. You'd have to report such incidents to the navy."
"Minor conflicts, like disputes between fishing boats or lost vessels, would fall under your jurisdiction."
Hearing this, Long Xiao was so frustrated that he threw his assignment letter down in anger. "Damn it! What's the point of this job? I'm a sword cultivator, and they've turned me into an errand boy for the navy? This is worse than being a scout!"
"Calm down," Zhao Xing advised. "The maritime regulations in the islands are extensive. Let's get to the location and assess things properly first."
"Plus, you're still a Sixth-Rank Right Division Director, which is a considerable position. While you can't fight the marine tribes, you're free to deal with pirates."
"You're both main officials, but I'm just an assistant," Long Xiao complained. As Right Division Director, he'd still be subordinate to a Left Division Director in his role.
"Don't complain," Chen Shijie consoled him. "At least you'll still be dealing with people, while Zhao Xing and I will be breeding horses."
"Exactly." Zhao Xing added, "Your job could be lucrative. It's not a bad deal for a sword cultivator. Once you settle in, there should be people willing to show their respect with gifts."
"I couldn't care less about that!" Long Xiao, ever the fighter, had only combat on his mind.
Regardless of their grievances, their appointments were finalized.
They were to report to their posts by October 3rd, leaving them just one month.
Long Xiao decided to indulge himself in Nanyang County, avoiding Gucheng altogether. He found the county seat far more entertaining, with music halls and even wrestling performances featuring young ladies.
Zhao Xing and Chen Shijie, meanwhile, began preparing for the move with their families.
Upon their return, they brought with them a fleet of twenty-three airships, most of which were distributed among family and friends, as well as for networking in official circles.
However, three of the prized Kirin airships would accompany them to the Eastern Sea.
Given that procuring supplies would be less convenient on the islands, Zhao Xing had purchased a batch of rare resources before leaving, intending to use them upon arrival.
After a busy period through September 20th, Zhao Xing, Chen Shijie, and their families made their way back to the Lihuo Dao Academy.
With three airships, one for each of them, they shared the cost equally.
Though as Honorary Transmission Masters they could travel freely, transporting the ships and supplies, which weighed at least several dozen tons, required special permission.
Even though they were Honorary Transmission Masters, using the academy's resources for this purpose came at a cost, albeit a reduced one.
"Brother, we're really headed for the Eastern Sea," Zhao Zheng remarked. "Using the transmission channels isn't cheap, is it?"
Zhao Zheng, after three years of study at the county academy, had become familiar with many aspects of cultivation.
"It's a journey of one hundred and twenty thousand miles to Chongming Prefecture. At double the return fare, I'd never pay it off in ten years," he sighed.
"You wouldn't usually need to repay it," Zhao Xing smiled, "but with all these supplies, the cost is higher. As a permitted user, I'll only need to cover ten thousand miles."
"Oh, I see."
Nearby, Madam Cai stood on the deck of the Kirin airship, staring at the enormous fire pit ahead, instinctively hiding behind Zhao Ruide.
The Kirin airship was flying directly toward a massive blazing portal, with flames towering over a hundred meters high. The sight was terrifying.
Having never witnessed such a spectacle, Madam Cai was in tears, clutching her husband and unable to lift her head.
"If you're afraid, go inside the cabin. Stop wiping your tears on my clothes; they're getting soaked," Zhao Ruide said.
With a sigh, Madam Cai intended to go inside, pulling Zhao Zheng along with her.
Zhao Zheng reassured her, "Mother, don't worry. It's safe."
His comforting words had the desired effect, and Madam Cai's fear lessened. She even moved in front of Zhao Zheng, ready to shield him in case of danger.
Zhao Xing, noticing her subtle gestures, flicked his finger, casting a Sleep Bug spell on Madam Cai.
"Zheng'er, help your mother inside to rest," he instructed.
"Huh? Mother fell asleep? Yes, Big Brother."
The airship flew into the fiery portal, traversing the intense flames.
Compared to borrowing fire for personal travel, this experience felt entirely different.
Zhao Xing sensed the surrounding space in constant flux, with fierce flames propelling the ship forward.
"Lihuo Divine Altar, truly remarkable. This indeed involves the Dao of Space," Zhao Xing marveled inwardly.
After only fifteen minutes of navigating the fiery space, a white vortex suddenly appeared ahead.
The airship emerged from the portal, revealing the clear sky once again.
A single flame shot through the barrier, merging into Zhao Xing's body—a mark of the Lihuo True Lord's Dao.
"We've arrived at Chongming Prefecture."
There was no branch of the Lihuo Dao Academy on the islands, so they first needed to land in the coastal Chongming Prefecture before heading to Purple Cloud Island.
When Zhao Xing had been granted land and fief rights, he had chosen to have them located in Chongming Prefecture.
"Sixteen thousand five hundred acres of granted land, with a fief of one thousand six hundred fifty households."
"All in Bixian County of Chongming Prefecture, which also falls under Princess You Ruo's territory."
Princess You Ruo's fiefdom included a total of eighteen counties and more than fifteen hundred private islands.
Half of the Purple Cloud Archipelago was owned by her family.
Among the various Great Zhou princesses throughout history, Princess You Ruo's holdings were unmatched.
Even now, her territory was still expanding. During Emperor Wu's reign, he saved her from a perilous situation and, as compensation, granted her even more lands. By sheer land holdings, Princess You Ruo's dominion would eventually be twice as large as it was now.
However, she lost control over the crucial Purple Cloud Archipelago and her position as Dean of the Bishui Sect. These losses could never be reclaimed.
"Foster Father, I exchanged my sixteen thousand five hundred acres of low-grade land in Bixian County for one thousand six hundred acres of high-grade land and five hundred acres of mid-grade land," Zhao Xing explained.
"All located in Dongyang County of Bixian."
"As for the taxes from the fief, you don't need to worry. Each year, the authorities will send people to deliver it to us."
"The lands were reassigned as early as the eighteenth year of the Jingxin Era. The three manors are already under management, with over five hundred servants in total for the Zhao Estate, and properties within the county city as well. You and Madam can choose wherever you'd like to reside."
These arrangements had been meticulously handled by Xia Jing over a year ago and were already running smoothly, with trusted servants and stewards in place. Zhao Ruide would be able to step in as the estate lord seamlessly.
"Good, good," Zhao Ruide grinned broadly. Madam Cai also brightened up, her fears from the journey entirely forgotten.
Imagine managing over five hundred servants—how prestigious that would be!
But she hadn't forgotten about her son. "What about Zheng'er's enrollment…?"
"Don't worry," Zhao Xing replied. "I'll go to Bixian County and speak with the Princess to finalize it."
Arranging for Zhao Zheng to enter the Bishui Dao Academy was as simple as a word from Princess You Ruo.
"Good, good. You're a capable elder brother," Madam Cai said, visibly relieved and pleased.
Meanwhile, Chen Shijie, accompanied by Gui Niang, moved to Dongyang County, close to Zhao Xing's territory.
Long Xiao tagged along as well, and the two of them would help familiarize Zhao Ruide and Madam Cai with the estates.
This would also allow them to inspect the household staff, ensuring there were no underlying issues, given that Xia Jing had managed the estates without the family's presence for over a year.
While they settled in, Zhao Xing took Zhao Zheng and set off for the county seat to meet with Princess You Ruo.
"Big Brother, are we really going to the Princess's residence?" Zhao Zheng asked, a bit apprehensive. "Will she agree to see us?"
"Of course," Zhao Xing replied confidently. "She is my teacher's wife, after all."
A few days earlier, Zhao Xing had sent a message to Princess You Ruo, notifying her of their planned visit.
The Earth Mirror, a prized military communication tool, allowed for seamless communication within county and prefecture-level cities. Messages could be transmitted across an entire province without issue.
Outside urban areas, however, the range was limited, and in certain remote locations, the Earth Mirror was entirely unusable.
"We're almost there," Zhao Xing pointed ahead. "Look, that's the palace Princess You Ruo maintains in Bixian County."
"We'll wait here; someone will come to greet us."
Zhao Xing activated his Earth Mirror, sending a message to Ji Zixuan.
Within a quarter of an hour, an airship appeared in the sky.
"Senior Brother, sorry to keep you waiting," Ji Zixuan called out, landing her airship.
"Thank you for coming, Junior Sister," Zhao Xing greeted her warmly. "The wait wasn't long at all."
"This must be your younger brother, Zhao Zheng? Handsome young man," Ji Zixuan commented, smiling.
"Greetings, Sister Zixuan," Zhao Zheng replied shyly, bowing respectfully.
"What a polite young man," Ji Zixuan said, offering him a gift box. "A small token for our first meeting."
"This…" Zhao Zheng looked to his older brother for guidance.
"If it's a gift for you, accept it."
"Yes, thank you, Sister," Zhao Zheng said, accepting it gratefully.
After the brief exchange, Ji Zixuan led Zhao Xing's Kirin airship into the palace grounds.
Princess You Ruo had a taste for grandeur and luxury, and her palace was both magnificent and opulent, featuring all the amenities one could imagine—gardens, artificial lakes, hot springs, and pavilions—crafted by the finest artisans.
At the rear of the palace was a horse ranch, where heavenly horses galloped through the clouds, Qilins drank from the lake, and phoenixes perched on giant trees.
Extravagant yet tasteful, the palace radiated the unmistakable elegance of royal wealth.
As Zhao Xing entered the palace, he respectfully saluted, "Disciple pays respects to Teacher's Wife!"
Zhao Zheng, following closely behind, knelt down with deep reverence. "Commoner Zhao Zheng pays respects to the Princess."
Princess You Ruo looked down at Zhao Zheng with a gentle smile. "So, this is your younger brother?" She scanned him with a discerning gaze. "He has good bone structure—potentially a fine martial arts candidate."
Zhao Xing had invested considerable resources into Zhao Zheng's training. Ever since he started earning rewards from his victories, he frequently sent foundational treasures home to support Zhao Zheng's cultivation. As a result, Zhao Zheng had already reached the late stage of the Ninth Rank, surpassing the general limits of county academy students.
"I've notified Dean Wu of Bishui Sect," Princess You Ruo informed Zhao Xing. "He'll be able to start in October. Until then, let him stay here. I'll assign a tutor to help him catch up on any areas he's lacking."
"Thank you, Teacher's Wife," Zhao Xing said gratefully, bowing deeply.
"My thanks to the Princess," Zhao Zheng added, bowing again.
"Zixuan, take him to get settled," Princess You Ruo instructed.
"Yes, Your Highness," Ji Zixuan replied, leading Zhao Zheng away.
Once they had left, Princess You Ruo's demeanor shifted. Her smile faded, and she addressed Zhao Xing with a hint of reproach, "Zhao Xing, you've certainly made a name for yourself, claiming the title of 'Invincible Sixth-Rank' at the Lihuo Dao Academy."
She raised her eyebrows, "Are you planning to follow in your teacher's footsteps and dominate every academy? Are you coming to Bishui Dao Academy next, to step on our pride?"
Zhao Xing immediately lowered his head, a picture of humility. "Teacher's Wife, I recognize my mistake. I'll accept any scolding you see fit."
In truth, Zhao Xing knew better than to argue with Princess You Ruo. Unlike his teacher, Liu Tianning, who could push back against her with fearless defiance, Zhao Xing understood that humility was the best approach to avoid further complications.
"Hmph! Make sure it doesn't happen again," Princess You Ruo scolded, her voice softening slightly. "The Seventy-Two Dao Academies form a powerful alliance. They're not an adversary you, a mere Sixth Rank, can afford to cross."
"Even your teacher faced consequences back then. What makes you think you could fare better?" she warned, her tone serious. "If you're truly aiming for a high position, you'll need to navigate these alliances carefully."
Zhao Xing nodded sincerely. "Thank you, Teacher's Wife, for your guidance."
Satisfied with his response, Princess You Ruo's expression softened, and she gestured toward a seat. "You're more sensible than your teacher. Come, have a seat."
"Thank you, Teacher's Wife." Zhao Xing respectfully took the seat she offered.
Once he was settled, she asked, "In your letter, you mentioned an assignment on Purple Cloud Archipelago. Which island and what position?"
"Twin Island, in Twin County, as the Left Division Director of the Dragon Horse Directorate."
The Eastern Sea islands had a unique structure where counties were automatically elevated by one administrative level, meaning Twin County operated at the level of a district.
Princess You Ruo's gaze grew thoughtful. "Do you understand the scope of this position?"
"Primarily, it involves raising, training, and selecting exotic beasts for the imperial court's battle mounts," Zhao Xing replied.
Princess You Ruo shook her head, clarifying, "It's not solely for the military. While most of the war beasts required by the court are raised on larger islands like Yalong Island and Myriad Beasts Island, the Dragon Horse Directorate also provides mounts for the royal family and combat pets for Dao Academy disciples."
"The Eastern Sea has tens of thousands of islands, but only a few have critical departments. You should work hard to make a name for yourself and aim for a transfer to one of those essential departments."
"I understand," Zhao Xing said, nodding firmly.
Princess You Ruo waved her hand dismissively, "Your assignment begins on October 3rd. On the first of October, join me on my ship for the journey there."
"Disciple wouldn't dare impose on Teacher's Wife," Zhao Xing quickly replied.
Princess You Ruo smirked. "Don't flatter yourself. I'm heading to Purple Cloud Archipelago to oversee internal appointments for the Dragon Horse Directorate."
"The Four Seas Beasts Competition, held between the imperial court and various marine tribes, will commence in twenty years."
"My responsibility in Purple Cloud Archipelago is to begin preparations for it now."
"What, did you think I was just a princess who indulges in luxury?" she scoffed.
Zhao Xing paused, then carefully asked, "Is this Four Seas Beasts Competition meant to access the Ruins of the Ancient Dragon Court?"
Princess You Ruo raised an eyebrow. "Impressive—you know quite a bit."
"Yes, the Ruins of the Dragon Court are one of the objectives."
"It's a century-old agreement between the imperial court and the Four Seas marine tribes to hold a grand competition every hundred years."
"It has been eighty years since the last competition."
"With each century and millennium, the ancient grounds of the Dragon Court become increasingly active."
"The imperial court's Yalong Island and Myriad Beasts Island were established specifically to prepare for these ancient grounds."
She continued, "When King Liang led his forces to conquer the Nine Heavens Yingyuan Prefecture, his Black Dragon Regiment was indispensable."
"The pure-blooded black dragons were raised in the ancient grounds of the Dragon Court, and King Liang even has a genuine Black Dragon King."
"But you'll never see that Black Dragon Regiment."
Zhao Xing had left the battlefield behind, and it was unlikely he'd witness high-level battles anymore.
"And it's not something you need to focus on right now. You're not even a Fifth-Rank official yet, so you don't qualify for participation," Princess You Ruo pointed out bluntly.
However, Zhao Xing's mind raced with thoughts. He hadn't come to the Eastern Sea to enjoy a leisurely life.
He needed to join the Four Seas Beasts Competition.
Not only did he want to access the ancient grounds of the Dragon Court for rare mounts, but he was also after the unique plant species there.
Current precious plant species, like the Floating Vine, were mere marvels by today's standards.
But the Dragon Court's ancient grounds housed irreplaceable plant warriors!
Their growth potential far surpassed that of Floating Vines.
However, with twenty years left until the event, he wasn't in a rush. He'd first accumulate achievements and secure a Fifth-Rank position before aiming for eligibility.
Just as Princess You Ruo had said, he currently wasn't qualified to participate.
The imperial court's selection process was strict. First, the strongest individuals within the Purple Cloud Archipelago would compete, followed by a contest among the islands of the Eastern Sea, and then a final competition among all Four Seas.
Those who advanced through each stage would earn a place in the grand event, securing the right to enter the Dragon Court's ancient grounds.
"Alright, you may go now," Princess You Ruo dismissed him. "I have other matters to attend to."
"Yes, thank you, Teacher's Wife." Zhao Xing bowed and left the palace.
"Senior Brother, you were impressive at the Lihuo Dao Academy," Ji Zixuan teased when Zhao Xing rejoined her.
"I had no choice. They cornered me," Zhao Xing replied with a rueful smile.
Princess You Ruo had been right—if he aspired to become the Grand Shennong, he couldn't ignore the influence of the Dao Academies. Earning their support would make his journey much smoother.
Liu Tianning had suffered setbacks in his time, which delayed his own path to the position of Grand Shennong.
Zhao Xing had held back during the Lihuo Dao Academy conflict, precisely because he recognized this long-term strategy.
The Seventy-Two Dao Academies weren't just influential for becoming Grand Shennong; they would play an even more critical role after the era of Emperor Wu.
In fact, Zhao Xing already had his eye on some of their treasures—such as the Lihuo Divine Altar. If he could control resources like these, it would greatly enhance his mobility.
Moreover, several academies, like the Dao of Creation Academy and the Shangluo Academy, housed epoch-defining treasures that would reveal their true power when spiritual energy fully resurged.
"Now that you're a Division Director in the Dragon Horse Directorate, do keep an eye on our students from Bishui Dao Academy," Ji Zixuan remarked playfully.
After her recent return, Ji Zixuan had become an instructor at the Bishui Dao Academy, officially gaining the rank of a true disciple within the sect.
Coincidentally, Bishui Sect's headquarters was located in Chongming Prefecture.
"Junior Sister, you're too polite. Should there be any need, I will do my utmost to assist," Zhao Xing replied earnestly.
He needed to build up achievements and would likely work closely with Bishui Dao Academy. Princess You Ruo was too busy to handle everything herself, so Zhao Xing planned to collaborate more with Ji Zixuan.
On September 27th, Zhao Xing reported to the Chongming Prefecture authorities, as Purple Cloud Archipelago fell under their jurisdiction.
On September 28th, with Princess You Ruo's introduction, he met his immediate superior, Wang Xuanyi, the Third-Rank Grand Director of the Dragon Horse Directorate.
The entire Dragon Horse Directorate of Chongming Prefecture, including the Purple Cloud Archipelago, was under Wang Xuanyi's command, illustrating Chongming Prefecture's elevated status and the significance of the Dragon Horse Directorate.
Previously, Dan Tai Ming had served as the highest-ranking official in the Department of Waterways with the title of Fourth-Rank Director, while Wang Xuanyi held the esteemed Third-Rank position in the Dragon Horse Directorate.
On the morning of October 1st, at the fourth quarter of the Chen hour, Zhao Xing bid farewell to his family in Bixian County and boarded Princess You Ruo's grand ship. Long Xiao and Chen Shijie, however, did not have the privilege of traveling on her vessel.
By the end of the Wu hour, they reached Twin Island within the Purple Cloud Archipelago.
