THE REFUSAL

Days had passed since Tobias's conversation with David. Despite the tension between them, Tobias had remained resolute. He dove deeper into work, throwing himself into his projects with even more intensity. Yet, despite his professional success, there was a gnawing emptiness that had started to take root—an emptiness he couldn't completely ignore.

One evening, as Tobias sat in his office overlooking the city, the weight of the silence in his penthouse felt suffocating. His mind wandered back to Ann, to their past, to what had been. He tried to shake off the memories, but they lingered like an uninvited shadow.

His phone buzzed on the desk, breaking the stillness. It was Sophie, his personal assistant and someone he had trusted implicitly for years. They'd grown close over the years, and though Sophie had always respected Tobias's boundaries, she knew him better than anyone.

"Mr. Hawke,"Sophie's voice came through the phone, light but with an undercurrent of concern. "There's someone here to see you. A Mr. Carter."

Tobias sighed. "Let him in."

A moment later, David entered, his face a mixture of frustration and determination. It had been a few days since their last heated conversation, but David hadn't let go of his concern for Tobias's well-being.

"Tobias," David started, voice low but sharp. "We need to talk again."

Tobias didn't look up from his desk. He was tired of these conversations. Tired of being told what he should or shouldn't do. But he knew he couldn't avoid this forever, so he nodded, gesturing to the chair in front of him.

"I've made myself clear," Tobias said, his tone clipped. "I don't need a wife. I don't need a partner. I don't need anyone, David. Not after what happened. Not after her."

David leaned forward, hands clasped together, his eyes intense. "I understand the pain you're still carrying, Tobias. But running from it isn't helping. You're building a fortress, and you're isolating yourself in it. This isn't about replacing Ann; it's about living. About moving forward"

Tobias's fists clenched on the desk, his jaw tightening. "I am moving forward. You don't get it, David. I've moved on. I'm fine. I don't need marriage. I don't need love. I don't need anyone to feel... complete."

David's patience was wearing thin, but he kept his voice steady. "You're lying to yourself. It's not about completeness. It's about connection. You can't just shut yourself off forever."

The air between them thickened, the intensity of the conversation palpable. Tobias stood abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. "I don't want to talk about this anymore. This is the last time, David. I have decide what I need. And right now, I need to be left alone."

David's face hardened, but he took a breath, controlling his frustration. "Fine. But you're wrong. You can't keep running. And you're pushing everyone away. I'm not going to watch you waste away, trying to avoid your own heart."

Tobias said nothing in response. He turned his back, walking toward the windows, looking out over the city again. The room was silent, the only sound coming from the soft hum of the office. David knew there was nothing more to say for now, so he left, his footsteps echoing as he walked out.

The next day, Sophie called him into her office, her voice unusually serious. She had always been the pragmatic one in Tobias's life ,never too emotional, always focused on the tasks at hand. But today, something about her tone caught his attention.

"Tobias," she said when he entered, her voice lower than usual. "We need to talk about the future. About your legacy."

Tobias raised an eyebrow. "What about it?"

Sophie didn't hesitate. "You've built this empire **Hawke Enterprises**, everything you've worked for. But there's a point where it all becomes meaningless if there's no one to carry it forward. No one to pass it on to."

Tobias scoffed, leaning back in his chair. "I have no interest in children, Sophie. I'm not going to have a family just to preserve a business. It's all about what I do now."

Sophie stood and walked over to the window, looking out over the city with Tobias. "I know you're not ready for marriage, and I know you still carry the pain of losing Ann. But... I've been thinking about this for a while. And I think I might have a solution that doesn't require you to commit to a traditional relationship."

Tobias turned to look at her, confused. "What do you mean?"

Sophie met his gaze, her expression serious but understanding. "A surrogate. You could have a child, your legacy, without needing to marry or open yourself to emotional vulnerability. You could raise the child on your terms, and the business your name would live on. You can have both: the life you've built and the future you've always wanted."

Tobias stared at Sophie for a long time, as the weight of her words sunk in.

It was a radical idea, one that went against everything he'd believed about relationships and family.

But as he thought about it, he couldn't ignore the truth he was still driven by the need for legacy, for something to carry on after him.

He had never considered the idea of a child without the responsibility of a marriage, but Sophie's suggestion was practical, almost detached.

"Why would I want to bring a child into a world where I don't even want to be part of a family?" Tobias asked, his voice uncertain.

Sophie turned to face him, her eyes softening with understanding. "Because, Tobias, sometimes it's not about following the path that's expected of you. It's about doing what you need for yourself. You've worked so hard to create something that matters. Maybe it's time to consider what that means beyond business."

Tobias mulled over her suggestion for a few moments. His initial resistance was there, but something in Sophie's words struck a chord with him.

He couldn't deny the fact that he had longed for a sense of family without acknowledging it. Maybe this was a way to fulfill that need without revisiting the painful aspects of relationships. He was used to control, to shaping his world according to his desires.

"A surrogate," he repeated slowly, as if testing the words.

Sophie nodded, her expression neutral but not unkind. "It's not perfect, but it's an option. You get to keep the control. You get to build the future your way."

Tobias stared out of the window again, his mind whirling. Was this really the solution? Could he live with such a decision? But then, the thought of leaving a true legacy behind, something tangible, something real, made it seem almost... logical.

"Let me think about it," Tobias said, his voice quieter now, his mind grappling with the idea.

Sophie nodded, sensing his hesitation but knowing the seed had been planted. "Of course. Take your time. But if this is something you want, we can make it happen."

As she left the room, Tobias sat in silence, staring out over the city. For the first time in a long while, he didn't feel completely certain of what he wanted. But Sophie's suggestion had cracked open a door he had never even considered and now, he wasn't sure whether to walk through it, or to close it for good.
