Kelsie sat behind a desk in her office, a boy of no more than 17 sitting across her, fidgeting with his fingers.
She stared at his panic-stricken face and sighed softly, "I don't see your parents or guardian anywhere. I'm obligated to tell them the result of your scan since you're still a minor."
The boy clenched his jaw, slightly leaning towards the table, "I'm an only child. My father is no more and my mother is currently in a nursing home."
Kelsie's eyes dimmed a little. "Is that so?"
Grabbing her desk with both hands, he probed her, "Doctor, just tell me what the scan said. I can take the news."
Kelsie was silent for a moment before she turned her computer around, revealing the brain scan on it.
"You have a tumor in your brain."
"A tumor? So I need surgery." He laughed nervously.
Kelsie turned the screen back to her, shaking her head gently.
