Chapter 2: Beneath the Surface

The night lingered in the air like an unspoken promise, and as Noor walked away from Zayd's lingering gaze, a strange feeling washed over her. Was it curiosity? Caution? Or something darker, something she couldn't quite place?

She couldn't deny the subtle magnetism that drew her to him. Yet, the more she thought about it, the more she realized how dangerous that attraction could be. Her life was set. Her family's future was mapped out. She had no room for distractions, especially not from someone like him.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a gentle tap on her shoulder. She turned around sharply to find her younger cousin, Amina, smiling at her.

"There you are, Noor! You've been lost in your thoughts, haven't you?" Amina teased, her eyes twinkling. "That man—Zayd Sultan—he's here with his family, isn't he?"

Noor nodded, forcing a smile. "Yes, he is."

"Interesting," Amina murmured. "I heard rumors that the Sultan family might be involved in some... questionable business lately. Be careful. Not everyone in that family can be trusted."

Noor blinked. She knew the Sultans were powerful, influential, but she hadn't heard anything about them being involved in anything nefarious. Still, Amina's warning tugged at her.

"I'll keep that in mind," Noor replied, dismissing the thought. The night was long, and there were plenty of people to talk to. Still, her mind couldn't shake the image of Zayd—the way his gaze had lingered just a little too long, as if he knew something about her that she didn't.

---

Meanwhile, Zayd couldn't get Noor out of his mind. As he stood by the balcony overlooking the event, a drink in his hand, he found himself watching her once again. He hadn't expected to be so intrigued by someone so... distant. Her walls were high, and he knew it would take more than just a few words to break them down.

"Zayd," a voice called out, pulling him from his thoughts. His older brother, Rayyan, appeared beside him, his expression a mix of concern and curiosity. "What are you doing here? This isn't your scene. The family's waiting for you downstairs."

Zayd sighed, taking a slow sip of his drink. "I'll be down in a minute," he muttered, his gaze still on Noor. "But tell Father, I don't plan on staying long."

Rayyan raised an eyebrow, following Zayd's gaze. "Her? Noor Farid? Is this about the rumors I've been hearing? You know the Farid family is... complicated."

Zayd shot him a sharp look. "I don't care about the rumors. I'm not here for business, Rayyan."

His brother laughed softly, though there was a hint of warning in his tone. "Whatever you say, little brother. Just don't let that woman drag you into anything you can't handle."

Zayd didn't respond. The tension in the air felt different tonight, and he knew that no matter how much he tried to deny it, his path was now linked with Noor's. Whether he wanted it or not.

---

As the night drew to a close, Noor tried her best to remain indifferent to the pull she felt whenever Zayd crossed her path. His presence lingered like a shadow, impossible to ignore. But she had no time for this. There was no room for distraction in her life. She had made her decision long ago—her future would be shaped by her family's expectations, not by her desires.

Yet, as she prepared to leave the auditorium, her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was a message from her mother:

"Remember, Noor. Your future is already planned. Don't forget what's at stake."

Noor stared at the screen, her heart sinking. She had been born into a world where her choices were never truly hers. Her mother's words were a constant reminder of that. But tonight... tonight something had shifted.

She stepped out into the cold night, the snow crunching beneath her feet. She glanced back toward the auditorium, but Zayd was gone.

Yet his presence remained, echoing in her mind.
