Noor could feel the weight of Zayd's gaze as he slowly backed away, the distance between them now seeming miles apart. She clenched her fists, trying to steady her breathing, trying to hold onto the tiny shred of composure she had left. The air between them crackled with unspoken words, the silence hanging in the space like a heavy fog.
Zayd turned his back to her, pacing the small café, his footsteps hurried, as though trying to outrun his thoughts. He didn't speak. His silence was more deafening than anything he could have said. Noor wanted to reach out, to close the distance, but she remained frozen in place, her heart beating erratically in her chest.
Finally, Zayd stopped. He exhaled sharply, his face a mask of frustration and pain. When he spoke, his voice was thick with emotion. "I never wanted this for you. You deserve peace, Noor. A life free from the darkness I've dragged you into. But I can't walk away from you. I can't let you go. Not now. Not when I've realized what you truly mean to me." His voice broke on the last words, and Noor saw the vulnerability that she had missed before.
She stared at him, the words hitting her with the force of a tidal wave. She had always known he cared for her, but this—this was something else. This was desperation. This was fear. He was as torn as she was, and it frightened her.
"Zayd," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I want to believe you. I really do. But everything you've kept from me, all the secrets… I don't know if I can trust you again."
Zayd's eyes darkened as he turned to face her. "You think I wanted this? To lie to you? To make you feel like you couldn't trust me? No. But I had no choice. I made a vow to my family, to protect you, to protect us. I couldn't let you get pulled into this war."
Noor shook her head, feeling a headache build behind her eyes. "I can't keep living in this uncertainty. It's too much, Zayd. I'm not sure how much longer I can stay in the dark."
Zayd took a step toward her, his hand reaching for hers. She didn't pull away, but her pulse quickened at the contact. "Then let me show you, Noor. Let me show you the truth. All of it. I'll expose every part of this world to you, and you'll see for yourself what I've been protecting you from."
Her breath caught in her throat as his words sank in. The thought of diving into that world—Zayd's world—filled her with both dread and longing. But could she really handle the truth? Was she strong enough to see everything, to understand it all, without it breaking her?
