The werewolf, who had been on the verge of killing Kraven, suddenly paused and looked up at the dark, rainy forest surrounding him.
The rain was falling harder, blanketing the woods in an almost suffocating density. Seizing this brief moment of distraction, Kraven launched a desperate counterattack.
Though death seemed inevitable, and he had steeled himself for it, the primal instinct to survive—the same instinct he had seen in countless prey he'd hunted—surged within him.
Gritting his teeth against the searing pain in his body, Kraven reached for a grenade at his waist and hurled it with all his might. The explosive landed with a heavy thud, detonating seconds later.
A deafening explosion filled the air as dirt and debris erupted from the ground. The force of the blast threw Kraven backward into a tree trunk, the impact leaving him dazed and in agony. Through the haze, his eyes caught sight of the sonic gun lying nearby.
Clawing his way toward it, Kraven grasped the weapon and aimed.
"Boom!"
A wave of invisible sound surged outward, hitting the werewolf squarely. Though its thick hide and enhanced physique withstood the grenade, the sonic waves sent the creature sprawling.
"That's right, you bastard!" Kraven shouted, his confidence momentarily returning. "I've faced beasts far more savage than you!"
The werewolf's crimson eyes glinted with fury. It let out an ear-splitting roar that shook Kraven to his core.
"Damn it!" he muttered, raising the gun to fire again. But before he could, the werewolf leaped forward, its powerful limbs propelling it with astonishing speed. In an instant, it was upon him.
Kraven barely managed to lift the gun in defense, but the sheer force of the werewolf's attack sent both him and the weapon flying. Despite his advanced shock-absorption suit, Kraven was left incapacitated, his body wracked with pain.
As the werewolf loomed over him, Kraven fumbled for the dagger at his waist. When its claw reached out to finish him, he thrust the blade toward its heart with all his remaining strength.
In his countless hunts, Kraven had learned that a stab to the heart could bring even the most resilient creatures to their knees. He hoped it held true for werewolves.
But the creature was faster. It seized his wrist with crushing force, twisting it until the dagger clattered to the ground. Kraven screamed in agony but swung his free fist toward the werewolf's throat—a vulnerable point in both animals and humans.
The strike failed. The werewolf grabbed him by the throat and lifted him off the ground. As Kraven struggled for air, he could feel his life slipping away.
But then, inexplicably, the werewolf let go.
Kraven fell to the ground, gasping and retching. The contents of his stomach—partially digested food—spilled out as he struggled to compose himself.
It was humiliation beyond anything he'd ever experienced. The werewolf had the power to kill him but chose to toy with him instead, like a cat playing with its prey.
Fueled by anger and shame, Kraven staggered to his feet. I'm the hunter, not the prey! he thought furiously.
Covering his throat, he limped deeper into the forest, the werewolf stalking him with unhurried steps.
At that moment, the drone filming the scene continued its live broadcast to countless viewers.
Antonia Aguilar, watching anxiously, turned to Glory. "Why hasn't it killed him already?"
"Animals sometimes enjoy torturing their prey," Glory replied, her brow furrowed. "It's like a cat playing with a mouse instead of killing it outright."
"Has anyone called the authorities?" Antonia asked.
"They wouldn't get there in time," Glory sighed. "It's at least a twenty-minute drive from New York to the state park, and the weather's terrible."
Antonia looked out the window at the pouring rain, then down at her phone. She had texted Gwen earlier, but there was no response. What's Gwen doing right now?
Meanwhile, Kraven's desperate flight was interrupted by an unsettling sensation. A new, more terrifying presence had entered the forest.
Both he and the werewolf froze, sensing the same danger.
Suddenly, a shadow darted through the rain. The werewolf reacted instantly, claws flashing as it clashed with the mysterious attacker. The impact echoed through the forest, and the werewolf staggered, blood dripping from a fresh wound.
The shadow vanished, merging seamlessly with the surrounding foliage. The werewolf growled, scanning the darkness for its elusive foe.
And then it struck again.
The ensuing battle was ferocious. The werewolf's raw strength and speed clashed with the shadow's precision and cunning. Their roars and the sounds of their struggle filled the forest, while Kraven watched in awe.
For the first time, he realized he was not the apex predator he had always believed himself to be.
The shadow revealed itself fully—a biomechanical creature of terrifying beauty. Its exoskeleton gleamed in the rain, and its movements were swift and lethal. The audience watching through the drone's live feed was captivated.
As the alien creature, the "Queen," continued its assault, it showcased an unparalleled mastery of combat. Every strike was calculated, designed to incapacitate or kill with ruthless efficiency.
Peter Parker and Helen arrived at the edge of the battlefield, the sounds of the clash reaching their ears.
Helen frowned. "Should we intervene? The Queen looks like it's in trouble."
Peter shook his head. "This forest is the perfect battlefield for it."
"You understand it that well?" Helen asked.
"Better than you," Peter replied, his mind flashing back to his past encounters with the alien species.
The battle raged on, each creature embodying the primal, unforgiving nature of predators. And in that dark, rain-soaked forest, the line between hunter and hunted blurred, leaving everyone questioning: Who truly was the top predator?
