Seeing Swampert land a punch on Glaceon and then secure victory, Buggy, standing on the battle platform, felt as though his own heart had been struck as well. His face immediately turned pale.
"Come back, Glaceon."
In the end, Buggy could only dejectedly retrieve Glaceon into its PokeBall, his expression extremely unpleasant as he looked at Swampert, who had already returned to Sato's side.
For Buggy, Sato's decision to destroy the battlefield was akin to pulling the rug from under him, completely dismantling his battle strategy. Now, he had no idea how he could possibly defeat Sato's terrifying Swampert.
With Swampert breaking free from its predicament and defeating Glaceon, its aura had grown even more overwhelming.
Even though it simply stood silently on the battlefield, Buggy and the other challengers could clearly feel the mountain-like pressure emanating from it.
Swampert's dominance was now undeniable. Even though the battle had not yet begun, the challengers already felt a level beneath Sato.
With referee Joe's signal, Buggy had no choice but to send out his second Pokemon, a Grass/Ice-type Abomasnow.
Buggy's Abomasnow was two levels higher than Glaceon, standing at level 44—the same as Swampert.
However, Buggy had no confidence in Abomasnow winning.
Even though Abomasnow had solid strength, compared to Swampert, there was no real contest. A direct clash would be disastrous.
Buggy knew that the best strategy to defeat Sato's naturally powerful Swampert was to kite it.
Glaceon, with its small frame and agility, was perfect for such a strategy, but bulky Abomasnow was not.
The battle quickly commenced.
As a Grass/Ice-type, Abomasnow held a type advantage. Moreover, it was naturally aggressive, launching a powerful Blizzard the moment Swampert rushed in.
However, under Sato's command, Swampert charged forward using an Ice Punch-crafted shield, blocking most of the Blizzard's power with a sand-infused ice barrier.
In the ruined battlefield, the bulky Abomasnow was slow-moving. Upon entering the field, it had to push aside chunks of ice and water just to make room for itself.
Meanwhile, Swampert charged forward like an unstoppable bull, smashing through every obstacle in its path without slowing down.
With no way to outrun it, Abomasnow could only brace itself as Swampert, still holding the shield, closed the distance through the storm.
At close range, neither side hesitated—Swampert unleashed Hammer Arm, while Abomasnow retaliated with Wood Hammer.
(Wood Hammer, a Grass-type physical move, power 120. Effect: The user slams into the target with its tough body, but also takes considerable recoil damage.)
Swampert's Hammer Arm and Abomasnow's Wood Hammer had the same base power, but due to the difference in users, their effectiveness was vastly different.
Upon collision, Abomasnow's Wood Hammer was immediately overpowered by Swampert's Hammer Arm, and the impact sent Abomasnow flying.
Abomasnow's massive body was blasted off the battlefield, crashing through multiple obstacles before landing outside the battle arena, unable to continue.
With Abomasnow's defeat, Sato finally secured his tenth consecutive victory in the Gym challenge, while Swampert achieved a personal streak of twenty wins.
"Phew, mission perfectly completed! But… I did wreck the battlefield. And those walls around the arena too. I wonder if Giovanni will be mad about this… what a headache."
Though initially pleased with his achievement, Sato's excitement waned as he glanced around at the now-destroyed battlefield and the gaping holes in the surrounding walls, his heart sinking with concern.
Meanwhile, Joe, acting as referee, announced that the challenge had to be temporarily suspended due to severe battlefield damage. The remaining challengers, upon hearing this, breathed a collective sigh of relief and quickly departed.
"Kid, you really did a number on this place! This battlefield won't be usable for at least two or three days. Lucky you—you just get to walk away, but I have to deal with the aftermath."
Once the challengers were gone, Joe approached Sato with a bitter smile.
"Sorry about that. I got too caught up in the fight… I regret it now. I'll cover the repair costs. I still have some points saved up—it should be enough to fix the battlefield and the walls. Just… Joe, please put in a good word for me with Boss Giovanni later."
Acknowledging his mistake, Sato offered an apologetic smile before asking for Joe's account details and immediately transferring 10,000 points.
In Team Rocket's currency, 10,000 points equaled 10 million PokeDollars—more than enough to restore the Viridian Gym's battlefield and walls.
"Now that's what I like to see!"
Seeing Sato transfer the points without hesitation, Joe was momentarily stunned before breaking into a grin, clearly pleased.
Even as one of Giovanni's direct subordinates, 10,000 points was no small amount. Seeing Sato act so tactfully and even bribe him, Joe couldn't help but feel delighted.
"Hahaha~~ This kid really gets it! Not bad, not bad. He understands human relationships and knows how to adapt—those are rare qualities. People like him survive the longest."
Watching the scene from his computer screen, Giovanni let out a laugh, his impression of Sato improving even further. The more he observed Sato, the more he felt he was a suitable candidate for his secret plans.
After a brief moment of thought, Giovanni pressed a button on his desk and made a short phone call.
"What are your orders, Lord Giovanni?"
Soon, a woman dressed in a secretary outfit entered the room and respectfully inquired.
"Take this to Orm. I've already instructed him—he'll know what to do."
Giovanni nodded, handing her a black badge.
Aside from its color, this black badge was identical in design to the green Viridian Gym badges awarded to challengers who emerged victorious.
As Giovanni entrusted the badge to his secretary, Sato had already left the Viridian Gym and was now at the Viridian City Pokemon Center.
After handing Swampert over to Nurse Joy for treatment, Sato found a quiet corner in the waiting area and pulled out his mission-exclusive communicator.
The screen displayed confirmation of his successful completion of the Gym Leader proxy mission, along with the corresponding rewards.
Like the Bug Catching mission, this one also had extremely generous rewards.
Perhaps due to the high difficulty and the fact that the mission was personally issued by Giovanni, the rewards far surpassed those of the Bug Catching task.
The base reward for completing the mission was 50,000 points, with an additional 25,000 points for every win beyond eight victories.
In total, Sato earned a whopping 100,000 points.
"Sticking with Giovanni is definitely the right move. He's unbelievably generous. No wonder his subordinates are so loyal—he's willing to spend big to nurture talent."
Seeing the 100,000 points credited to his account, Sato couldn't help but marvel.
At the same time, he had a realization—he was nothing but a small fry in comparison. Giovanni was the true ultimate tycoon.
