Chapter 143

"This meeting is over," Michael said finally, his tone brooking no argument. "I'll address the public in due course."

 

The board reluctantly filed out, leaving Michael and i alone in the conference room.

 

"You didn't have to do that," Michael said, his voice softening.

 

"Yes, I did," i replied. "Because you're not compromised, Michael. You're human. And if the world can't see that, we'll show them."

 

Later that evening, as i was reviewing potential allies to rally, my phone buzzed with an unexpected call. I frowned, seeing Vanessa's name on the screen. My first instinct was to ignore it, but curiosity won out.

 

"Vanessa," i said cautiously. "This is unexpected."

 

"I bet it is," Vanessa replied, her voice tinged with bitterness. "I've got something you might want. But it's going to cost you."

 

My grip on the phone tightened. "What are you talking about?"
