Chapter 8: Another day

The following day at the academy, Kai slipped into his seat just as Iruka-sensei began his lesson. The chatter in the classroom settled as Iruka picked up a piece of chalk and began to write on the board.

"Alright, class, today we're focusing on a basic but essential technique: the Substitution Jutsu," Iruka announced, looking over the room. "This technique may seem simple, but it can save your life in combat. Mastering it now will make you much better prepared for situations you might face out there."

Kai leaned back in his seat, hands casually in his pockets, as he listened. He already understood the mechanics of the Substitution Jutsu, having studied it intensely on his own. But he knew he had to keep up the appearance of a regular student.

("This jutsu relies on perfect timing and a sharp sense of spatial awareness. I'll practice it, but I'll make sure it looks like I'm still learning the basics like the others.")

Iruka spent some time going over the theory, explaining the hand seals, chakra control, and the importance of visualization. Kai kept his attention on Iruka, glancing occasionally around the classroom. Naruto was clearly struggling to pay attention, fidgeting in his seat, while Sasuke appeared focused and confident, as if he already had a firm grasp on the technique. Ino, sitting nearby, kept sneaking glances at Kai, her face slightly pink whenever he caught her looking.

After the explanation, Iruka clapped his hands to get everyone's attention. "Alright! Now we'll head outside for some practical application. I want to see everyone attempt the Substitution Jutsu with these logs here."

The class filed out to the training area, where several wooden logs were lined up for practice. The students stood in a line, each one stepping forward to attempt the jutsu under Iruka's watchful gaze. Naruto went first, struggling with his hand seals and ending up swapping places with a bush instead of a log, much to everyone's amusement.

Kai smirked slightly, watching Naruto's determined attempts. He admired the kid's resilience, despite his lack of control and precision.

("He might be clumsy, but Naruto has potential. That raw energy could be powerful if he learns to control it.")

Sasuke was next, and he performed the Substitution Jutsu with flawless execution, easily switching places with the log. Kai could see the spark of pride in his expression, though he tried to hide it under a cool demeanor. Iruka gave him a nod of approval.

When it was finally Kai's turn, he stepped forward, keeping his face neutral. He performed the hand seals slowly, giving the impression that he was focusing hard on each one. As he activated the jutsu, he swapped places with the log in a smooth but unremarkable manner, appearing just competent enough without showing his true skill.

Iruka nodded, giving him an approving smile. "Nice work, Kai. A solid first attempt."

Kai returned to his place, maintaining his calm exterior even as a few classmates whispered to each other about him. He could feel their curiosity and the slight tension that came from being the new, mysterious student. But he didn't mind—he preferred to keep his profile low for now.

As he watched the rest of the class, he made mental notes of everyone's abilities and styles. Many of them struggled with the Substitution Jutsu, while others managed to pull it off with varying degrees of success. It was a good opportunity for him to assess each of them.

("This is all useful information. I'm seeing who has talent, who has potential, and who's likely to hold the others back.")

After everyone had completed their attempts, Iruka gathered the class in a circle. "Great job, everyone! Remember, mastering these basics will form the foundation of everything else you learn. Keep practicing, and in time, you'll all be able to use the Substitution Jutsu without even thinking."

Kai nodded along with the others, though his mind was already racing ahead. He had learned more than enough to improve his understanding of his classmates. And though he held back today, he was confident in his progress.

As the class ended, Iruka dismissed them, and Kai took his time walking back, letting the others move on ahead.

("Today was just another step. I'll keep blending in, learning the patterns, understanding the dynamics of this world. For now, I'll keep a low profile… but one day, they'll all see my true strength.")

Kai adjusted his hood as he headed toward his apartment. The day's training was a reminder of what lay ahead: a world filled with potential allies and rivals, all unknowingly part of the journey he was beginning to shape.

The academy was just the start.
