The days after their quiet night in the art studio passed in a strange, fragile harmony. Mei Lin and Li Wei hadn't spoken much more about what had happened that night, but something between them had shifted. There was an unspoken understanding that, though they were both dealing with their own inner conflicts, they would stand by each other—at least for now.
Mei Lin was trying her best to focus on her studies, but her thoughts kept drifting to Li Wei. His presence was becoming more and more of a constant in her life, like a shadow she couldn't shake. And yet, despite the moments of closeness they shared, she couldn't ignore the distance that still lingered between them. It was like they were standing on opposite sides of a river, reaching out, but unable to bridge the gap.
As if that wasn't enough, Mei Lin's personal conflict between her dreams of becoming a lawyer and her passion for painting was starting to weigh heavily on her heart. She felt torn between two worlds: the practical, future-oriented life she had always envisioned, and the artistic, emotional world that seemed to call to her in a way she couldn't fully understand.
Sitting in her apartment late one night, Mei Lin stared at the stack of law textbooks on her desk. She had an important exam coming up, one that would significantly impact her academic standing, but she couldn't bring herself to open the books. Instead, her eyes kept drifting to the blank canvas propped up against the wall, taunting her with its emptiness.
A knock on her door startled her out of her thoughts, and she quickly stood up, smoothing down her shirt as she went to answer. When she opened the door, she found Li Na standing there, holding two cups of bubble tea and grinning from ear to ear.
"I brought reinforcements," Li Na announced, handing one of the cups to Mei Lin. "Thought you might need a break from all the studying."
Mei Lin accepted the tea with a grateful smile, motioning for Li Na to come inside. "You have no idea how much I needed this," she admitted, taking a long sip of the sweet drink. "I've been trying to focus on my exam, but my brain just won't cooperate."
Li Na flopped down on the couch, eyeing the stack of law books. "Can't say I blame you. Those look like they could put anyone to sleep."
Mei Lin laughed, though there was a hint of weariness in her voice. "Yeah, it's not exactly thrilling material. But it's important."
Li Na's expression softened as she looked at her friend. "You know, Mei Lin, you don't have to force yourself to follow this path if it's not what you really want."
Mei Lin sighed, sinking into the chair across from Li Na. "I don't know what I want anymore. I've spent my whole life working towards becoming a lawyer, and I do still care about it. But ever since I started painting again, it's like I've found a part of myself that I didn't even know was missing."
Li Na nodded thoughtfully, taking a sip of her bubble tea. "It sounds like you're torn between two parts of yourself. But the good news is, you don't have to choose one or the other. Maybe there's a way to have both."
Mei Lin tilted her head, considering her friend's words. "I don't know. It feels like being a lawyer and being an artist are two completely different worlds. How could I possibly do both?"
Li Na smiled, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Who says you have to follow the rules? You've always been one to break boundaries, Mei Lin. You can make your own path."
Mei Lin chuckled, though the weight of her indecision still pressed down on her. "I wish it were that simple."
Li Na reached out, placing a reassuring hand on Mei Lin's arm. "It can be. Just take it one step at a time. You don't have to have it all figured out right now."
Mei Lin looked at her friend, feeling a surge of gratitude for her unwavering support. Li Na had always been there for her, even when things got tough. In moments like these, Mei Lin realized just how lucky she was to have someone like Li Na by her side.
"You're right," Mei Lin said softly. "I don't have to figure everything out at once. I just need to trust myself."
Li Na grinned, squeezing Mei Lin's arm before letting go. "Exactly. And in the meantime, how about we take a break from all this serious stuff and go watch that new romantic comedy everyone's been talking about? I heard it's hilarious."
Mei Lin smiled, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. "That sounds like the perfect distraction."

As they made their way to the movie theater later that evening, Mei Lin felt lighter than she had in days. It was nice to take a break from the weight of her responsibilities and just enjoy a night out with her friend. The movie was everything they had hoped it would be—funny, heartwarming, and just the right amount of cheesy.
By the time they left the theater, both girls were laughing so hard that they could barely catch their breath.
"I needed that," Mei Lin said, wiping tears of laughter from her eyes. "That was exactly what I needed."
Li Na grinned, linking arms with Mei Lin as they walked down the street. "Told you. Sometimes you just need to laugh it off."
As they continued walking, a sudden thought crossed Mei Lin's mind, and her laughter slowly faded. "Hey, Li Na… do you think Li Wei and I could ever really work? I mean, with everything going on in both our lives?"
Li Na's expression grew more serious, though she didn't lose her usual warmth. "I think you and Li Wei care about each other a lot. But relationships are complicated, and sometimes they don't work out the way we want them to. The important thing is to be honest with yourself and with him. If it's meant to be, you'll figure it out."
Mei Lin nodded, though uncertainty still gnawed at her. "I guess I just don't know if I'm ready to deal with everything that comes with being with him. His life is so… different from mine."
Li Na squeezed her arm, her voice gentle but firm. "You don't have to make any decisions right now, Mei Lin. Just take it one day at a time. You've got a lot on your plate as it is."
Mei Lin smiled gratefully, feeling reassured by her friend's advice. Li Na always had a way of putting things into perspective, and for that, Mei Lin was endlessly thankful.

That night, after returning home, Mei Lin sat on her bed, reflecting on the evening. Her thoughts wandered back to Li Wei—his distant expression, the way he seemed to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders. She missed him, despite their differences, despite the uncertainty that clouded their relationship.
Her phone buzzed, pulling her from her thoughts. She glanced at the screen and saw Li Wei's name, her heart skipping a beat. It was a simple message:
> "Are you free tomorrow? I need to talk."
Mei Lin stared at the screen for a moment, her mind racing. What could he possibly want to talk about? Was it about them, about their future? Or was it something else entirely?
Her fingers hovered over the screen as she typed out her reply.
> "Yeah. I'm free."
She hit send, her heart pounding in her chest. Whatever it was that Li Wei needed to say, Mei Lin knew that it would change everything. She just didn't know if she was ready for it.
