With the seal broken, the tremors became more frequent and intense. The ground beneath the town seemed to pulse with dark energy, and strange phenomena began to occur. Lights flickered in the sky, shadows moved on their own, and people reported hearing strange whispers in the night.
Alex felt the weight of his dreams pressing down on him more than ever. He had seen this darkness coming, but now that it was here, he felt powerless to stop it. The coalition had done everything they could to prepare the town for natural disasters, but this was something beyond their control — something ancient and malevolent.
As the days passed, reports of strange occurrences grew more frequent. People claimed to have seen figures made of shadow lurking in the woods, and animals began acting erratically. Even the air felt different, heavy with the scent of decay.
The town's government held an emergency meeting to address the situation, but there were no answers. Scientists couldn't explain the phenomena, and the geological activity didn't align with any known fault lines. Fear spread like wildfire, and many families began to pack up and leave, unwilling to face the unknown.
Alex and the coalition worked tirelessly to keep the town calm, but it was a losing battle. People were scared, and rightfully so. The darkness that had been sealed away for centuries was rising, and it seemed unstoppable.
One night, as Alex sat in his office, trying to make sense of it all, he received a call from an old friend — a historian who specialized in ancient legends and myths. Alex had reached out to him after finding William Keating's journal, hoping he might have some insight.
"I've been looking into the legend you mentioned," the historian said. "The one about the darkness beneath the earth. There's not much written about it, but I did find something interesting. The indigenous people believed that the darkness could only be sealed by a sacrifice — a willing soul who would offer themselves to keep the seal strong."
Alex's blood ran cold. "A sacrifice? That's the only way?"
"That's what the legend says. But there's no way of knowing if it's true or just a story passed down through generations."
Alex hung up the phone, his mind racing. A sacrifice. Could it be the answer? But who would be willing to offer themselves? And even if they found someone, how could they be sure it would work?
He didn't have time to dwell on it. The darkness was rising, and they were running out of time. The tremors were growing stronger, and the strange phenomena were becoming more dangerous. Shadows moved with purpose now, creeping closer to the town with each passing day.
That night, Alex dreamt again. He saw the town engulfed in darkness, the sky blotted out by swirling black clouds. The ground split open, and from the depths, something monstrous emerged. He heard the screams of the townspeople as they were swallowed by the void, and in the center of it all, he saw himself, standing on the edge of the abyss, watching as the world fell apart.
He awoke with a start, his heart pounding in his chest. The time had come. The darkness was here, and there was no stopping it.
