80: Return to Asgard

The morning sun rose over Asgard as Kevin, Skadi, Shaki, and the Valkyries stepped off the Rainbow Bridge. The golden light bathed the divine kingdom in a serene glow, making its towering spires and majestic halls seem otherworldly.

Rigg, the gatekeeper of the Rainbow Bridge, stood solemnly as he watched the unusual procession. A human, a giant, and a goddess were accompanied by Valkyries and Tyr, the God of War and Justice. The scene was unprecedented.

"Go ahead," Rigg said, his tone even but laced with curiosity. His gaze lingered on Kevin, the sole mortal in the group. "The All-Father, Mother Frigg, and Loki await you in the Silver Hall."

Kevin gave a polite nod. "Thank you, Lord Rigg."

Neil, perched on Kevin's shoulder, gave a farewell chirp before flying off. "I'll meet you later," she called as she flapped toward Hoder's palace.

As they walked toward the Silver Hall, Shaki's heavy gaze roved over Asgard's magnificent architecture. This was his first time entering the divine kingdom. The walls surrounding Asgard were built to keep giants like him out, and yet, here he was—walking freely.

He paused before the towering Silver Hall, its spires glittering in the sunlight. Shaki's thoughts grew heavier.

He turned to Kevin, his voice low and skeptical. "Human... What did you promise Loki and the others? What lies did you tell my daughter? And what exactly are you planning?"

Kevin raised an eyebrow, exhaling in exasperation. "Master Shaki, for the last time, I have a name. It's Kevin."

Before Shaki could respond, Skadi touched his arm gently. "Father," she said softly, her voice calming him. Shaki sighed, falling silent.

The group continued their walk, passing temples and palaces of grand design. Gods stopped to observe the peculiar procession, their gazes filled with curiosity. However, Odin's decree ensured there were no interruptions.

Upon reaching the Silver Hall, they were met by Balder, the God of Light, who stood waiting at the entrance. Her golden dress shimmered in the morning light, and her radiant smile seemed to warm the entire area.

The moment her sky-blue eyes fell on Kevin, she descended the steps quickly. Her arms spread wide as she closed the distance.

"Kevin!" she called, her voice filled with joy.

Before Kevin could react, Balder enveloped him in a tight embrace, pulling him into her chest.

Kevin flushed as he caught the faint scent of flowers from Balder. He wriggled slightly, his voice muffled. "Sister Balder, I'm fine! Really, I'm fine!"

Skadi frowned, her expression confused and slightly displeased. She opened her mouth to speak, but before she could, Shaki's voice broke in.

"You... are you Balder, the God of Light?"

Balder turned her attention to Shaki, her brilliant smile undiminished. "Yes, I am."

Shaki's stern features softened. Even among the giants, Balder was admired for her purity and grace. He gave a small, respectful nod.

Meanwhile, Skadi continued to eye Balder, especially as the goddess seemed to examine her closely.

"Ah, so you're Skadi," Balder said, stepping toward her with a curious tilt of her head. Without warning, she gently cupped Skadi's chin, lifting her face for a closer look.

"You do look quite similar..." Balder murmured thoughtfully, leaving Skadi completely bewildered.

Tyr coughed loudly, breaking the moment. "Sister Balder, please maintain your composure. Everyone is watching."

Realizing her behavior, Balder stepped back, still smiling brightly. "You're right, Tyr. I just got a bit carried away. I'm so happy to see Kevin safe."

Kevin took the opportunity to inch away from Balder, muttering under his breath, "I really need a break from all this hugging..."

Balder heard him and laughed. "Oh, Kevin, don't be shy. Come, let's go see Mother and Father. They've been waiting anxiously for your return."

She grabbed Kevin's hand and began leading him toward the Silver Hall.

The interior of the Silver Hall was just as awe-inspiring as its exterior. Sunlight streamed through crystalline windows, casting shimmering patterns on the marble floor. At the far end of the hall, Odin sat on his high throne, with Frigg at his side. Loki stood near them, his expression unreadable but his mischievous eyes locked on Kevin.

"Kevin," Odin said, his voice echoing through the hall. "Come forward."

Balder reluctantly released Kevin, letting him walk alone to the center of the hall. Skadi and Shaki followed closely, their expressions a mix of awe and apprehension.

Kneeling respectfully, Kevin greeted them. "Great God Odin, Lady Frigg, Lord Loki."

Odin's piercing gaze swept over Kevin and the group behind him. "You've done well," he said simply.

Odin addressed Shaki directly. "Mountain giant Shaki, you were prepared to sacrifice yourself for your daughter's future. It was noble, but unnecessary. This was a test for Kevin, and he has proven himself worthy."

Shaki's eyes widened slightly, his hands balling into fists. "A test?"

"Yes," Loki interjected, stepping forward with his usual sly grin. "But not just for him. For you too, Shaki."

Skadi looked between them, her confusion growing. "What are you talking about?"

Odin leaned forward, his voice steady. "Skadi, you are destined to join the Aesir. Your father's sacrifice would not have ensured your safety, but Kevin's actions have."

Shaki's shoulders sagged slightly, his mind reeling. Skadi reached for his hand, squeezing it tightly.

Loki turned his gaze to Kevin. "And you, Kevin, what will you take as your reward? The blood of Fenrir?"

Kevin nodded slowly. "Yes, but not just for myself. I made a promise to Skadi. I want her father to live. Surely we can reach an agreement."

Odin's lips curved into a faint smile. "You continue to surprise me, Kevin. Very well. Shaki will live, but he must agree to the conditions we set."

Shaki raised his head, his voice firm. "If it ensures Skadi's future, I'll accept."

As the meeting concluded, Kevin felt a wave of relief wash over him. He glanced at Skadi, who smiled warmly at him.

"You kept your promise," she said softly.

Kevin scratched the back of his head, grinning. "Of course. I'm a man of my word."

Balder, standing nearby, beamed at Kevin. "Let's celebrate! After all, you've accomplished something remarkable."

As they left the Silver Hall, Kevin couldn't help but smile. He had passed another test, forged new bonds, and proven that even a human could stand tall in the realm of gods.
