Weeks passed, and the landscape changed with the arrival of winter. The streets were dyed white, covered by a thick layer of snow that seemed to erase the traces of what had been autumn. It was as if time itself was trying to wrap everything in a blanket of calm, although beneath the surface, things were far from calm.
Anne and Axl began to distance themselves from Jacob, not because they wanted to, but because circumstances seemed to push them in that direction. Jacob, absorbed in his relationship with Emily, barely noticed what was happening around him. His conversations with Anne became few, and when they did occur, they felt forced, as if they were both talking through an invisible wall. Axl, for his part, tried to get closer to Jacob on a couple of occasions, but the awkward silences and avoided glances made it clear that there were still unhealed wounds between them.
