After hanging up the phone, Harry turned around and found Sparrow Cat's ears flattened like tiny wings, pretending to stare nonchalantly at the empty fish tank.
"So, you heard everything, right? Or do I need to repeat it?"
"Heard what? I wasn't eavesdropping." Sparrow Cat's voice was casual, but the flick of its ears betrayed its curiosity.
"Those are the conditions. If you're not interested, the door's wide open. You can leave anytime."
Sparrow Cat couldn't keep up the pretense any longer.
"Fine, I'll help you catch Chandler. But I want an official position and fifty dollar a day for meals. Don't even think about skimping. I know the difference between cost price and markup."
It stretched its wings smugly, adding, "That old hound always told me how he worked himself to the bone, risking his life just to get fifty dollar a day for food. Turns out he wasn't even half as broke as he claimed."
