Chapter 43

Chapter 43

"What's wrong with my husband?" Yan Ruoshan asked nervously.

"He won't die immediately, but next time he's admitted, who knows?" Li Xin replied calmly. She had known for a while that Qian Shaowen had health problems, but she hadn't expected him to be in such a bad condition. Given his current state, Qian Shaowen's prognosis was not optimistic.

"Is surgery not an option?" Yan Ruoshan asked, unwilling to give up.

"Actually, Mr. Qian's condition is very poor, and surgery is not advisable. Even if the surgery were performed, the chances of success are very low. Generally, we wouldn't recommend surgery. However, if surgery isn't done, Mr. Qian won't last long. But I remember Dr. Li had a similar patient a few years ago and performed a very successful and impressive surgery. Perhaps, if Dr. Li operated on Mr. Qian, the success rate would be higher…" Dr. Zhang, who was nearby, spoke up.

"Are you talking about Dr. Li Yuandong?" Yan Ruoshan couldn't connect Dr. Li with Li Xin, thinking instead of the hospital's most authoritative surgeon, Dr. Li Yuandong, who was also Li Xin's father.

"Haha, no, not Director Li. It's Director Li's daughter, the beautiful doctor right here," Dr. Zhang said with a smile. Since Li Xin had returned to the hospital, both the male doctors and patients seemed more energized.

Yan Ruoshan was really stunned again. She had never imagined that Li Xin was actually the daughter of Li Yuandong, and she was even more surprised to realize that the doctor in front of her was indeed the same Li Xin she knew. Yan Ruoshan couldn't help but reevaluate Li Xin. Her long loose waves were tied up, her makeup was much lighter, and she was wearing a white coat, making her look completely different from the Li Xin she once knew. Only her eyes still held a hint of seduction, reminding her that this was indeed the same person.

When Li Xin graduated, she relied on her own skills and her father, who was the hospital's deputy director, for support. Not long after her graduation, she was already able to perform surgeries independently, completing many complex operations that could be considered examples for medical schools. Her skills made her stand out, but unfortunately, this rising star suddenly disappeared from the medical field just as she was beginning to gain recognition. Now, with her father promoted from deputy director to director, Li Xin's return as an assistant physician sparked some controversy. However, after a few recent successful surgeries, the criticism quieted down; it had to be said that Li Xin was indeed a genius.

From a young age, Li Xin was exposed to medicine. While other children were reading fairy tales in elementary school, her father was showing her anatomical diagrams. In middle school, he had her dissect various animals, and in high school, her father, Li Yuandong, often took her to observe surgeries. Li Xin felt that growing up surrounded by these bloody scenes made it quite challenging for her to develop as a healthy child. It was no wonder that she later became Yan Ruoshan is lover; perhaps that was also a form of rebellion against her father's strict upbringing.

Li Yuandong came from a poor background and worked extremely hard in his early years, gaining fame quickly. Today, he was a prominent authority in the medical field, with his father-in-law being a major shareholder in the hospital, enjoying both fame and fortune while maintaining strict standards for his three children. His eldest daughter, Li Xin, was the most talented and the one he was most dedicated to nurturing. However, Li Yuandong never understood why this daughter, in whom he had placed his highest hopes, suddenly came home one day and said she liked women. Not only that, she also declared that she wanted to be a woman's lover instead of a doctor. At that moment, Li Yuandong almost had a stroke from anger; he threw his daughter out of the house for ruining the family's reputation. This ungrateful daughter disappeared for five whole years, and every time Li Yuandong thought of her rare medical talent, he sighed, feeling it had been wasted.

"Dr. Zhang, I haven't held a scalpel in years; I'm quite rusty. I can perform small surgeries, but the big ones are beyond my capabilities. Mrs. Qian should really consider asking my father," Li Xin said with a smile, but she pronounced the words "Mrs. Qian" with a touch of emphasis.

Naturally, Yan Ruoshan wouldn't just take Dr. Zhang's word and allow Li Xin to operate in a rush.

"Is Director Li available? I'd like to see him," Yan Ruoshan asked Dr. Zhang.

Seeing this, Li Xin turned and went to check on other patients, feeling indifferent. Her father had grown old, and especially at that moment, he wanted to retire. His thinking had become conservative, and conservatives generally didn't like surgeries with low success rates. The less they liked them, the less inclined they were to perform them.

"Dr. Li, I want you to operate on my husband," Yan Ruoshan was direct when she saw Li Yuandong. In fact, Li Yuandong, being the most experienced and authoritative surgeon, rarely performed surgeries himself. Since Li Xin had returned, he had fulfilled his wish to retire and was planning to travel the world with his wife.

Li Yuandong cast a thoughtful look at Yan Ruoshan before speaking.

"Actually, I don't recommend the surgery because the chances of success are very low." Qian Shaowen was a regular patient at his hospital, so Li Yuandong was quite familiar with his health condition.

"What are the chances?" Yan Ruoshan had already asked many doctors before. Usually, the doctors discouraged surgery, but now that Qian Shaowen's condition had worsened, she felt it was necessary to take the risk of a low-probability surgery. She couldn't just let Shaowen wait for death.

"Less than one percent." Given Qian Shaowen's current health, he really wasn't suitable for a major surgery, and Li Yuandong didn't want to be the doctor who failed with his last patient before retirement.

"There aren't any success stories?" Yan Ruoshan was persistent; as long as there was a spark of hope, she wouldn't give up.

"These cases are rare in the country. My daughter Li Xin had a relatively successful surgery a few years ago, although luck played a role. But to be honest, her success rate with the scalpel is two or three percent higher than mine. She's a rare talent, and that's not just self-praise," Li Yuandong said seriously. Li Xin's talent allowed her to do what others couldn't, which was why Li Yuandong was willing to concede; that talent was truly one in a million.

"Her?" Yan Ruoshan suddenly felt the world was crazy. The woman who seemed to care only about dressing up and appeared incredibly superficial was suddenly presented as her savior. Thinking about it, Yan Ruoshan felt like the world was distorted or something.

"The world is full of talented people; perhaps there are other doctors more suitable." Li Yuandong hinted that he was refusing to let his daughter take on Qian Shaowen's surgery.

What someone in Li Yuandong's position said was undoubtedly true and reliable. Yan Ruoshan prepared herself to find Li Xin; clearly, this woman was no longer someone who would bow to her whims.

"Do you know my daughter?" Li Yuandong really wanted to ask if his daughter had been her lover all these years, but he couldn't bring himself to say it. The scandal of Li Xin with Yan Ruoshan had caused quite a stir, and Li Yuandong had heard some rumors. No matter how disappointing his daughter was, as a father, he still wanted to know how she had been living during these years.

Yan Ruoshan is body trembled slightly, pretending not to hear Li Yuandong's question, and continued walking out. It was indeed an awkward relationship.

As Yan Ruoshan left Li Yuandong's office and walked down the hospital hallway, she saw Li Xin just finishing her rounds and coming out of a room. For the first time, Yan Ruoshan felt that Li Xin seemed very unfamiliar, like someone she had never known and never tried to understand.

As the two approached each other, Li Xin noticed that Yan Ruoshan is face didn't look good—worried, anxious, and tired. This woman had always been a workaholic who didn't know how to take care of herself but liked to show strength. Li Xin felt a slight pang in her heart, a little painful. She still couldn't face this woman without feeling anything; she just pretended to be indifferent as she prepared to walk past Yan Ruoshan.

"Li Xin!" Yan Ruoshan called out.

Li Xin stopped. "What can I do for you, Mrs. Qian?" Li Xin asked sarcastically.

"If you were to perform the surgery, what would be the chances of success?" Yan Ruoshan asked.

"Forty to fifty percent, I suppose." Li Xin replied casually, confirming that she was still thinking about Qian Shaowen, that walking medicine pot who somehow deserved such treatment from Yan Ruoshan. It was quite enviable.

"So, can you operate on him?" Yan Ruoshan looked at Li Xin, who was indifferent, realizing that she had never treated her that way.

"No!" Li Xin firmly rejected the idea. She wasn't generous enough to operate on her rival. "Do you think that because you abandoned me, I would operate on your man? Mrs. Qian, I can't help your husband." Li Xin said with a cold smile before preparing to leave; she was waiting to reel in the fish.

"What do you want? I can meet any condition you set,"

Yan Ruoshan called to Li Xin's retreating figure.

"Any condition?" Li Xin stopped again, slightly raising the corners of her mouth.

"As long as you state the conditions, I can meet them," Yan Ruoshan reiterated seriously.

"You're really willing to make any sacrifice for Qian Shaowen?" Li Xin asked, feeling her heart heavy at that moment.

Yan Ruoshan nodded. Without Qian Shaowen, there would be no current Yan Ruoshan; everything she did for him was deserved.

Seeing Yan Ruoshan nod, Li Xin felt a wave of anger. Why could she give herself body and soul to Qian Shaowen but be so cold to her? She felt utterly insignificant. Thinking about it made Li Xin very angry.

"Fine, I'm willing to operate on Qian Shaowen, but I want you to divorce him and become my lover. I also want you to hold a press conference to announce to the world that the two of us are having an affair. What do you think?" Li Xin turned and raised an eyebrow at Yan Ruoshan.
