Chapter 102 Satisfaction and Duty: Li Xin and Yan Ruozhe's Contract
Yan Ruozhe stepped into Li Xin's apartment, a luxurious space near the hospital that Li Dongdong had bought for his daughter. The thought of living here with Li Xin from now on made Yan Ruozhe feel a knot of unease in her stomach. The idea of becoming Li Xin's mistress seemed preposterous, yet somehow, this absurdity had become her reality.
"Don't you like it here?" Li Xin asked. The place where her beloved would reside had to meet her exacting standards. Just imagining their life together filled Li Xin with immense joy.
Yan Ruozhe shook her head. She wasn't particular about living conditions; clean and tidy was sufficient. Li Xin had certainly ensured that.
"Shaowen will be bringing over my personal belongings later," Yan Ruozhe mentioned.
"Anything important?" Li Xin inquired.
"Not really. Just some personal items." Things that would be useless if left at the Qian residence anyway. So, when Qian Shaowen offered to deliver them, she hadn't refused.
"Tell him not to bother. Just throw it all away." Li Xin didn't want Qian Shaowen to have any excuse to see Yan Ruozhe. Besides, she wanted to provide for her woman herself. She was a well-paid doctor, after all, and as the daughter of a major hospital's director, she was undeniably well-off. Though, truthfully, Li Xin had no idea how much money was actually in her account. She had absolutely no sense of financial management and no clue how much her father paid her. It was definitely a generous amount, though.
"That's wasteful. Since he's offering to bring them, just let him." Despite having been Madam Qian for so many years, Yan Ruozhe had always been meticulous with money, never spending unnecessarily, never wasting. In the past, she had considered indulging a spendthrift like Li Xin her greatest extravagance.
"Hmph." Li Xin dragged out the sound, making her displeasure obvious.
"I just realized how little you own. It's as if you were always ready to leave at a moment's notice." Qian Shaowen had someone carry in Yan Ruozhe's belongings just a single box, pathetically meager. It made him sigh, as if it had foreshadowed the end of their relationship from the very beginning.
"I've never liked buying things impulsively, so I've never accumulated much," Yan Ruozhe explained.
"Ruowen, I'll take you shopping tomorrow!" Li Xin interjected. She would buy Yan Ruozhe so many things that it would look like she was settling in for good.
"Can I speak with Ruowen privately for a moment?" Qian Shaowen asked Li Xin.
"What can't you say in front of me?" Li Xin retorted sharply.
The hostility in Li Xin's demand made Yan Ruozhe's brow furrow slightly.
"Five minutes!" Seeing Yan Ruozhe's disapproving look, Li Xin decided she ought to show a little grace. After all, she had essentially stolen Yan Ruozhe away from Qian Shaowen. She should at least maintain the air of a gracious victor. Li Xin gave herself a mental pep talk. Sometimes, she felt like an immature child, clutching her favorite toy tightly and glaring at anyone who even looked at it.
"She's very possessive of you," Qian Shaowen said with a faint smile. He had sensed Li Xin's animosity toward him before, but he hadn't understood the reason for it back then.
Only after Li Xin obediently retreated to the bedroom did Yan Ruozhe's expression soften slightly. She didn't respond to Qian Shaowen's remark.
"Ruowen, sometimes I wonder… if you don't actually like her. If she's just forcing you to stay with her by holding my surgery over you…" Qian Shaowen still couldn't bring himself to let Yan Ruozhe go.
"That's not it. I really do like her. Otherwise, I wouldn't have stayed with her all these years," Yan Ruozhe cut him off. She didn't want Qian Shaowen clinging to false hope. Their relationship was over. Truthfully, divorcing him hadn't been entirely against her will; she had felt a weight lift from her heart.
Qian Shaowen gave a bitter smile. So, Yan Ruozhe had only been with him out of gratitude. He couldn't afford to be selfish any longer.
"This is a transfer agreement for the shares under my name. They're what you deserve." Yan Ruozhe had worked tirelessly for the Qian family all these years; this was her rightful compensation. And after holding her back for so long, he at least wanted to leave her with something.
"I won't sign it. You know how I am once I make up my mind, I don't change it," Yan Ruozhe refused the shares. Her resolve was firm.
"Ruowen…" Qian Shaowen sighed. He knew all too well how stubborn she could be.
"You've always been like family to me. Don't measure everything in money, alright?" Yan Ruozhe met his gaze as she spoke.
"You're still that same stubborn girl from back then. I really can't do anything with you." Meeting Yan Ruozhe had probably been the luckiest thing that ever happened to him. Though there was regret in his heart, he knew it was time to let go.
"Are you two finished yet?" Li Xin, left alone in the bedroom, had nearly gone crazy with impatience. She couldn't hold back any longer and burst out, unable to bear Qian Shaowen and Yan Ruozhe talking privately.
"We're done. I'll take my leave, then." Knowing Li Xin disliked him, Qian Shaowen took the initiative to leave.
"Do you… resent me for using underhanded tactics to keep you by my side?" Once Qian Shaowen was gone, Li Xin wrapped her arms around Yan Ruozhe from behind. She didn't know if Yan Ruozhe secretly blamed her for tearing her and Qian Shaowen apart. Deep down, Li Xin was terrified terrified that Yan Ruozhe was only staying out of obligation, that she secretly hated her.
"I don't resent you." Yan Ruozhe didn't believe Li Xin had any obligation to perform Qian Shaowen's surgery. Everything came at a price, and she considered this a fair exchange. If anything, she was grateful she could afford it. Truthfully, though she'd always held some prejudice against Li Xin, she hadn't disliked her otherwise; their entanglement wouldn't have lasted so many years. She just didn't know if she could reciprocate the kind of love Li Xin wanted from her.
"Will you ever fall in love with me?" Li Xin turned Yan Ruozhe around to face her.
"I don't know." Yan Ruozhe had no answer to that question.
"I don't care. Even if you can't love me, I won't let you leave me," Li Xin declared firmly.
"I said I'd be your mistress, so I will be. I don't break my word," Yan Ruozhe said, a slight frown creasing her brow. She didn't like how fixated Li Xin was on this issue. Was her promise really so untrustworthy?
Mistress. That word again. It really was just a duty to her. Li Xin suddenly hated the term.
"Do you know a mistress's most important responsibility?" If Yan Ruozhe wanted to treat this as a task, then Li Xin would teach her exactly how to be a proper mistress and secure some benefits for herself in the process.
"Hm?" Yan Ruozhe obviously knew a mistress's primary role was in bed, but she couldn't bring herself to say it aloud, so she played dumb.
The slight discomfort on Yan Ruozhe's face amused Li Xin. Even this rigid, proper woman could feign ignorance.
"Satisfying me, body and soul." Just saying it made Li Xin look forward to how Yan Ruozhe would fulfill this duty. Back in the day, Yan Ruozhe had been extremely passive in bed someone who couldn't even be bothered to receive, let alone take the initiative. Li Xin, the natural bottom, had been forced to take the lead. And the worst part? Even as the top, she still had to pray Yan Ruozhe was in the mood to let her. Just thinking about it was tragic.
But now? Now, Li Xin could reign supreme in bed, top when she wanted, bottom when she pleased. It was like a slave finally rising to masterhood. Hmph. Treat it like a mission, will you? If you can't complete it properly, I'll just make you start over. Again and again.
