Chapter 14: The Shadow King’s Herald.

Just as the final preparations for battle were being made, a dark cloud appeared on the horizon, hovering ominously over the western hills. As it drew closer, the cloud took shape, revealing a figure cloaked in shadow, mounted on a twisted, monstrous steed.

A hush fell over the city as the figure approached the gates, its presence filling the air with a suffocating darkness. The guards shifted uneasily, but Aelric stepped forward, his gaze unwavering.

The figure halted just outside the gates, its hollow, echoing voice reverberating through the air. "I bring a message from the Shadow King."

Aelric's heart clenched, but he forced himself to remain calm. "What does he want?"

The figure's voice was cold, filled with malice. "He offers mercy, if you surrender the Lost Heir. Give him up, and he will spare the city."

A murmur ran through the gathered soldiers and citizens. The tension was palpable, and Aelric could feel their fear and uncertainty. But he stepped forward, meeting the Herald's gaze with defiance.

"I am the Lost Heir," he declared, his voice steady. "And I will never surrender to the Shadow King. Tell him that Eldoria stands united, and we will fight to the last."

The Herald let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "Then you have chosen your fate. The Shadow King's army will descend upon this city, and not a soul will be left standing."

With that, the figure turned, vanishing into the shadows as quickly as it had come.

Aelric felt a weight settle on his shoulders, but he stood tall, his eyes blazing with determination. He turned to the crowd, his voice strong and unwavering.

"The Shadow King wants us to give up, to live in fear. But I refuse to let him take our home, our lives. We will stand together, fight together, and we will not fall. Eldoria's spirit lives in each of us. Let that be our strength."

The crowd erupted in cheers, their fear replaced by a fierce resolve. For the first time, Aelric felt the true power of hope, the bond that united them all in the face of darkness.

As he gazed out over the people, he knew that this was only the beginning. The final battle was near, and he would fight not just as the Lost Heir, but as the protector of all Eldoria.
