On his way back, Jacob made a brief stop at the location where he had left the merchants bound. He wondered if they had succumbed to hunger and thirst by now. But as he approached, he found nothing but discarded ropes and trampled grass. They had escaped.
Not that it mattered. Jacob already had a detailed list of every merchant involved in this barbarian scheme. Their names were inked in the documents he carried—evidence that would soon find its way into the right hands.
By dawn, the towering walls of Ironhelm came into view. Jacob descended on the outskirts, guiding Dusty to a smooth landing. He slid off the sky serpent's back and ran his hand along his scaly hide, giving him a firm pat.
"Good work out there, Dusty. You really pulled your weight this time."
