Chapter 3: Whispers in the Shadows (Continued)
"The storm is coming. Find her before the stars bleed."
The words played over and over in his mind, gnawing at him like a puzzle he couldn't solve. Who was "her"? And what exactly did the "bleeding stars" mean? Sato had a feeling it was no ordinary message. Whoever sent it had knowledge of things he wasn't yet privy to, things that stretched far beyond the city of Astraea's bright lights and technological facade.
He gripped the letter tighter, as if holding on to it might somehow give him the answers he sought.
Suddenly, there was a faint sound behind him—soft, almost imperceptible, but enough to set his instincts ablaze. He spun around, eyes narrowing. The street behind him remained as empty as before, the shadows pooling in the alleyways and corners, watching. Waiting.
He reached for the hilt of the small blade concealed beneath his coat. His heart pounded, but his hand remained steady. Astraea was a dangerous city, and Sato had learned early on that you could never trust its stillness.
"Who's there?" he called out, his voice cutting through the silence.
For a long moment, there was nothing but the whistle of the wind. Then, from the darkness, a figure emerged. Cloaked and hooded, their movements were slow, deliberate, almost ghostly. A soft glow emitted from beneath the hood, and as the figure drew closer, Sato saw it—a pair of glowing red eyes.
He took a step back, cursing under his breath. The crimson eyes reflected the same ominous hue as the "bleeding stars" the letter mentioned. This was no coincidence.
"You're looking for her," the figure said, their voice low, almost a whisper. "But you're not the only one."
Sato tightened his grip on his blade. "Who are you? How do you know about this?"
The figure remained silent, their glowing eyes locked on Sato's. Slowly, they raised a hand, pointing toward the alley from which they had come.
"If you wish to know the truth, follow me. But be warned—there are some things better left unknown."
Sato hesitated. Every instinct screamed at him to stay away, but the words from the letter tugged at him, pushing him toward the unknown. If this person knew something about the storm, about the stars, then he couldn't afford to turn back now.
With a curt nod, he followed.
The figure led him through a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, the air growing colder with each step. The further they went, the more Astraea's bright lights faded, replaced by a dim, eerie glow that seemed to pulse from the shadows themselves.
Finally, they stopped in front of an old, abandoned structure. The building looked like it hadn't seen life in years, its windows boarded up and its walls covered in graffiti. Yet, there was something about it that made Sato's pulse quicken.
"This place…" he muttered, glancing at the cloaked figure. "What is this?"
The figure turned to face him, their red eyes glowing brighter. "This is where the stars bled for the first time. And where you'll find what you seek."
Before Sato could respond, the figure vanished into the shadows, leaving him standing alone in front of the decrepit building. He cursed again, his hand instinctively reaching for his blade.
Taking a deep breath, he pushed open the door.
Inside, the air was thick with dust and the faint scent of something metallic—blood? The room was dimly lit, the only source of light coming from a single candle flickering in the corner. As Sato stepped further inside, his gaze landed on something strange: a set of symbols etched into the floor, glowing faintly with a dull, red hue.
At the center of the symbols was a girl.
She sat motionless, her eyes closed, her long, dark hair cascading over her face. Despite the eerie atmosphere, there was something fragile about her, something that tugged at Sato's heart. He took a cautious step forward.
"Hey… Are you—"
Before he could finish, the girl's eyes snapped open. They glowed red—just like the figure's in the alley.
Sato froze.
The air around them seemed to shift, growing heavy with an unnatural energy. The girl slowly rose to her feet, her gaze locked on Sato, her expression unreadable.
"You're the one," she whispered, her voice soft but filled with a strange intensity. "The one who's been searching for the truth."
Sato's mind raced. "Who are you?"
She smiled faintly, though it didn't reach her eyes. "I'm the key to the storm. And if you want to stop it, you'll have to follow me into the heart of it."
Before Sato could respond, the ground beneath them trembled. The symbols on the floor flared to life, glowing brighter and brighter until the entire room was bathed in a blinding red light.
And then, everything went dark.
