Chapter 12 Finding a Job in Heavenly World

Wan Chu'er slowly walked out of the Glass Factory Family Quarters, and following the impressions in her memory, she found a small dilapidated playground nearby.

It's called a playground, but it's really just a piece of land the size of a playground, with a rusty goalpost placed on it. The local kids often played here, and in Wan Chu'er's memory, there was always an old man practicing boxing.

When she arrived at the playground, there were already a few boys kicking a ball around, but she did not see the old man who practiced boxing.

So she stood in a corner, slowly massaging her sore limbs while waiting for the boxing old man to appear, with the hope of learning some martial arts, to quickly enhance her ability to defend herself, so that she could better protect herself and take revenge on those who had hurt her.

After waiting for about half an hour, the boxing old man finally appeared. It was a bald old man in his sixties with a stern face, who found himself a corner and started practicing boxing with a rigid routine.

Wan Chu'er watched for half an hour, then turned away disappointed.

This old man's boxing was not suitable for her; it was not the kind of aggressive martial arts she wanted, and it might be more suitable for elderly people to move their limbs around.

After leaving the shabby playground, Wan Chu'er limped along slowly. In just over ten minutes, she turned onto the busiest street in Wutong County. There were sparse crowds on the street, with late-night food stalls, vendors pushing carts selling snacks, and some shops closing for the night, with all the street lights turned on.

She slowly took in everything along the roadside, and when she reached the People's Square of Wutong County, she noticed that there were significantly more people here. There were people out for a stroll, playing, and some setting up stands selling snacks and toys, which seemed to be doing pretty well.

Wan Chu'er carefully observed these stalls, silently noting the flow of people and purchasing situations in her mind. Seeing how intently she looked, the vendors mistook her for a potential customer, even going so far as to distract themselves by calling out to her.

These stalls seemed to be doing quite well; perhaps Bai Zhixi could come here to set up a stall in the evening, which would be much easier than mending shoes for people.

After watching for a while longer, Wan Chu'er continued on her way, and up ahead, the sound of intoxicating music could be heard.

Looking forward, Wan Chu'er saw a place ablaze with lights and bustling with activity. Oh, it was the famous nightclub of Wutong County: Heavenly World.

She remembered this place. After her college entrance examination in her past life, having failed to be accepted into any university, and before Bai Zhixi fell, she had let herself go for a while and had come here twice.

The entrance of Heavenly World was decorated in a resplendent and luxurious manner, with two young and handsome boys standing at the door, soliciting customers. It looked very much like an ancient brothel, only that the beautiful girls had been replaced by handsome young men.

You could see people occasionally entering Heavenly World, most of whom did not look very reputable.

Wan Chu'er walked slowly past, and when the two young men saw someone passing by, they called out, "Heavenly World welcomes..." But when they got a clear look at Wan Chu'er, they smiled, swallowed their words, and ignored her completely.

Wan Chu'er was still wearing her high school uniform from the day, her face was still bruised in blues and purples, and she had her hair simply tied in a ponytail at the back. She looked every part the simple high school student, and it made no difference to her that they ignored her.

If it were any other high school student, they might become anxious and nervous, hurrying to leave this place, but Wan Chu'er now had the soul of a thirty-six-year-old, and with her indifferent attitude, naturally, she did not feel any nervousness or unease.

Wan Chu'er walked up to the entrance of Heavenly World, made a turn, and stepped inside.

"Hey, little sister, this isn't a place for you," one of the boys at the door quickly stepped forward to stop her.

Heh, pretending to be so respectable! Wan Chu'er scoffed internally, halting her steps.

"I'm just going in to buy a bottle of drink, is that not allowed?" she asked, tilting her head.

The young man blocking her way couldn't help but chuckle at her cocky demeanor. She clearly looked like a green 16 or 17-year-old schoolgirl, yet she maintained a face of indifference, her eyes slanted upward, exuding an aura of pride and disdain.

"Alright, alright, if you've got money, you're the boss." The young man chuckled lightly and made a welcoming gesture with his hand, letting Wan Chu'er inside.

As Wan Chu'er stepped in, the lighting dimmed. She casually picked a table and sat down, propping her chin, watching the men and women starting to dance in the dance floor ahead, showing no sign of motion for quite some time.

"Little sister, you can't just sit here for free; you have to order something," said a woman in a black mini skirt upon noticing Wan Chu'er sitting alone. She inwardly criticized the slackness of the two at the door for letting a middle schooler in. The child sitting there looked totally out of place, like a little white rabbit that had wandered into a wolf's den, and she really didn't want the nightclub's reputation to get tarnished.

Seeing Wan Chu'er not speaking, the woman smiled brightly and said, "You ran away from home, didn't you? Hurry on back, this isn't the place for you."

Wan Chu'er raised an eyebrow, not expecting the nightclub from 1996 to be so conscientious, with person after person urging her to leave.

"I want to see your manager," Wan Chu'er said earnestly.

"What?" The woman paused for a moment before asking, "What's your relationship with our manager?" She instinctively assumed Wan Chu'er must be an acquaintance of the manager, or else why would she ask to see the manager directly? It didn't make sense for an ordinary schoolgirl in her uniform to be here.

Wan Chu'er blinked and said, "He'll know when he sees me."

And so, ten minutes later, Wan Chu'er sat in a small office on the second floor, as the woman told her this was the manager's office and he would be here shortly for her to wait.

Looking at the empty desk in front of her, Wan Chu'er sneered. No wonder they were so relaxed about letting her wait in the office alone; the manager was probably not such a good person.

However, she had no worries or uncertainties about what she was about to do.

"Who's looking for me?" A young male voice came from outside, then the door opened, and Wan Chu'er turned to look at the newcomer.

A young man, about 25 or 26 years old, stepped in and his gaze met Wan Chu'er's.

"It's you!... You're looking for me?" The young man was initially taken aback, but then quickly composed himself.

This young man was the same one from Phoenix Mountain in the afternoon. When he first saw Wan Chu'er sitting in his office, he was startled, but it quickly dawned on him that Wan Chu'er probably didn't recognize him, as she was looking for the manager of Heavenly World.

Wan Chu'er simply took the man's surprise as a normal reaction to seeing her; after all, he didn't know her, and her appearance was out of place. Without any fuss or wasting time, she got straight to the point:

"Excuse me, are you the manager of Heavenly World? I'm looking for the manager here."

The man raised an eyebrow, sat back in the chair behind the desk, and said, "I am the manager of Heavenly World, my last name is Bai. Are you sure you haven't got the wrong place?"

Indeed, she shared a surname with her mother, Bai Zhixi, too bad Bai Zhixi was an only child, and there was no talk of relatives or the like.

Wan Chu'er stated, "I'm here to look for a job for the night."

Manager Bai stumbled a bit and gave Wan Chu'er another once-over, chuckled, and said, "We don't have any work suitable for you here."

"Who said I wanted to work here!" Wan Chu'er frowned and retorted.
