The dust settled in the forest clearing where Hans had left Josuke battered and defeated. Blood trickled from the corner of Josuke's mouth as he knelt on the ground, his breathing ragged and labored. His sword lay beside him, chipped and smeared with dirt. The weight of Hans's final blow still pressed on his chest, and he could feel the bruises forming across his ribs and shoulders.
Hinata rushed to his side, her face pale with worry. "Josuke!" she cried, kneeling down next to him. Her trembling hands hovered over his injuries before she began to channel her healing magic. A soft glow emanated from her palms, soothing the worst of his pain.
Josuke coughed and forced himself to sit upright despite the searing pain in his torso. "Hinata… Did you find Nina?"
"She's fine," Hinata reassured him, her voice trembling as she tried to hold back tears. "She's unconscious, but I stabilized her. I left her in a safe spot, but I had to come check on you."
Josuke groaned, wiping blood from his lips. "Good… That's good." He clenched his fists, frustration bubbling to the surface. "Damn it! Why wasn't I able to beat him? Hans just… played with me like I was nothing."
Hinata glanced at him with concern. "You fought hard, Josuke. Hans isn't just anyone"
"That's not the point," Josuke snapped, his voice filled with bitterness. "It's not just his strength. There's something about him… His energy. It's familiar, but also… twisted. Like I've known it before, but it's been warped into something else."
Hinata placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "You've been through so much today. Don't push yourself too hard trying to figure it out. Rest first, and we'll deal with Hans later."
Josuke sighed, his anger giving way to exhaustion. He leaned back against a rock, closing his eyes. "Yeah… maybe you're right."
Meanwhile, the battle between Maya and Rin raged on. The air inside the cave was thick with tension and the crackling sound of clashing energy. Maya's three-way staff twirled in her hands, its tips glowing with lightning magic. She darted around the cavern with incredible speed, striking at Rin from every angle.
Rin, a devil enchanter of immense power, matched Maya's ferocity with cunning precision. She manipulated the corpses of the giant spiders around her, animating them with dark energy to serve as her puppets. The massive arachnids lunged at Maya, their limbs slicing through the air like blades.
Maya leaped back, spinning her staff to deflect an incoming attack. Her lightning surged forward, reducing one of the spider corpses to ash. "You think hiding behind these puppets will protect you?" Maya taunted, her voice cutting through the din of the battle.
Rin smirked, her eyes glinting with malice. "You're a persistent one, aren't you? I'll admit, you've got some bite. But you're nothing compared to me."
The two women clashed again, their strikes echoing through the cavern like thunder. Each blow Maya landed seemed to grow stronger, and Rin's composure began to waver. For the first time in the fight, the enchanter devil felt something close to irritation.
Maya, emboldened by her success, pressed the attack. Her staff crackled with electricity as she swung it in a wide arc, aiming for Rin's torso. Rin narrowly dodged, but the lightning grazed her cheek, leaving a faint burn mark.
The enchanter devil's eyes flared with anger as she touched her face. "You dare to mar my beautiful face?" she hissed, her voice dripping with venom. "You'll pay for that, human."
Before Rin could retaliate, Hans's voice echoed in her mind. His tone was calm, but laced with urgency.
"Rin," Hans said, "our work here is done. It's time to return to the hideout."
Rin growled in frustration. "This bitch had the audacity to strike my face, Hans. I won't leave until I smash hers in."
Hans sighed, his voice steady but firm. "Think rationally, my dear. In less than five seconds, Kyle will arrive at the entrance of that cave. He'll smash through your barrier and either capture or kill you, depending on how he feels in that moment. Your obviously kaiju failed to hold him in elaris , which means we're out of time. The choice is yours."
Rin's jaw tightened as she processed his words. Her pride screamed at her to stay and fight, to punish Maya for the humiliation she'd endured. But Hans's warning lingered in her mind. She knew he was right. Staying here meant death or imprisonment, and she couldn't risk jeopardizing their mission over her wounded ego.
With a snarl, Rin glared at Maya. "This isn't over," she spat. "I'll be back you dirty bitch , and I'll make sure to smash your face in next time."
Before Maya could respond, Rin vanished in a burst of dark energy, leaving behind a trail of shadows.
Maya stood in the now-silent cavern, her staff still crackling with residual lightning. She scanned the area, her breathing heavy as the adrenaline from the fight began to fade. The corpses of the spiders lay scattered around her, lifeless once more.
Arthur, Silver, and the rangers approached her cautiously, their weapons at the ready. "Maya!" Arthur called out. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Maya replied, lowering her staff. "Rin's gone. She retreated."
Arthur frowned. "Why would she leave so suddenly? She had the upper hand for most of the fight."
Maya shook her head. "It wasn't her decision. Someone was giving her orders. I could see it in her eyes."
"Orders?" Silver echoed, his voice cold. "Hans."
Maya nodded. "Most likely. Whatever they're planning, this was just the beginning."
Arthur clenched his fists. "We need to regroup and figure out our next move. Josuke and Hinata might need our help."
Back in the forest, Josuke sat quietly as Hinata finished healing his wounds. His strength was slowly returning, though the memory of his defeat at Hans's hands still stung.
As he stared into the distance, Josuke's thoughts drifted back to the strange familiarity of Hans's energy. It gnawed at him, an enigma he couldn't ignore.
"I'll figure it out," he muttered to himself. "And next time… I won't lose."
Hinata placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "We'll all be ready, Josuke. You're not alone in this."
Josuke managed a small smile, her words giving him a glimmer of hope. For now, they would rest. But the battles ahead were far from over.
