The old writing was still vivid in my thoughts as I stood in the fortress's faint light. I had to face Leoric because I couldn't contain it any longer.

When I walked up to him in the great hall, he had a little smug look on his face. "Hello, Helen," he said to me. "How is your training going?"

I sucked in a calming breath. "I read something last night, Leoric. in the secret chamber. Instead of carrying out the prophecy, the book described a monarch who would assume control of the dark force.
