Chapter 10: MADISON

Everyone knows everything about everyone—this is another of the 4,724 reasons I want to escape Athens.

Late in the afternoon, I quickly grab my vibrating phone. I am walking on eggshells trying not to wake my mother.

Bethany-ready for dinner & movie?

Me-yes

Bethany-good. I’m in your driveway.

What? She’s here? Why would she drive all the way out to my house? I grab my cash and quietly slip from the house.

Bethany waves through her open car window. She wears her usual smile, but I know she is up to something.

“I’m driving. Hop in.”

I slide into her passenger seat and buckle my safety belt.

After she pulls from my driveway, she dives right in. “I don’t like to talk about friends when they aren’t present. I need to let you know Adrian and Hamilton shared with Troy their memories of your family story before and after your dad’s death. Of course, Troy then mentioned it to me and I had an epiphany.” Bethany’s eyes remain on the road.

I open my mouth to stop her.
