Chapter 84: Madison

We arrive at Alma’s room an hour before tonight’s game. I unpack a wide variety of activities for Liberty throughout the room. As Alma is already in bed for the night, I don’t have to worry about her falling over any of them.

The head of her bed is raised to allow her to easily chat with us and view the TV. With arms up, Liberty signals she wants me to lift her onto the bed.

“Be careful,” I prompt.

Liberty sits facing Alma and blabbers. Alma smiles and listens as Liberty shares a story of some sort. After a minute, she wiggles her way off the bed, back to her toys.

“She…happy…” Alma’s slurred speech is difficult to understand. The stroke has caused her to lose mobility in the left side of her face. She struggles with word choices and is easily frustrated when she can’t communicate.
