Chapter 80: Hamilton

Madison: Alma has hip surgery tomorrow at 11

Me: how are you holding up?

I dial her phone before she can respond.

“Hello.” Her voice sounds so small.

“Are you home?” I ask in almost a whisper. I know she’ll hear me as I speak into the mic and wear my earphones.

“Yes,” she yawns. “I’ve been home about 30 minutes. How about you?”

“I’m on the bus back to the hotel,” I explain in a hushed voice. I try not to draw the attention of the entire team.

“I’m good,” Madison lies.

“Um, Madison, it’s me. You don’t have to appear to have it all together. Tell me the truth.” I already know the truth.

“I’m scared. What if something happens during the surgery? She’s acting weird on the pain meds. Things go wrong in surgery all the time, and with her age, there’s more of a risk.” She sucks in a shuddering breath.  “What if she’s not strong enough to walk after the surgery? What if she can’t come back home? She looks so frail lying in the hospital bed.”
