Chapter 90: Hamilton

My mother’s house comes into view. I find it odd that no vehicles are in the driveway. Mom knew I’d be here for dinner, and it’s 5:30 p.m. That’s weird. I shoot Mom a text before I exit my parked truck.

Me: I’m here. where are you?

I decide to carry my bags inside while waiting for Mom’s reply. The house is dark. I turn on a light as I walk through the kitchen and upstairs to my room. I hang my suit in the closet and place my duffle on the bed. A stuffed toy lays on a pillow. Amy must have left it last time she had the twins over to visit Mom. I check my phone as I descend the stairs. Still nothing.

Me: hello?

Mom: sorry, I’m at store. be home soon

I peek out the kitchen window at the sound of a vehicle coming up the lane. I don’t recognize the light blue minivan. I walk outside to greet the stranger. Perhaps they’re lost and need directions.

As the van parks, I recognize Madison in the driver’s seat. I approach, a smile on my face.
