It felt like a complete miracle when the security guard, as soon as he realized it was Elijah who was trying to stop the gate from closing, actually stepped aside and made the gate open up. It creaked in an even more friendly sound that was higher pitched, almost as if it was apologizing for closing so suddenly in the first place.
Elijah and I walked through the gate together. I almost passed out from relief when I was on the other side. I turned to face him, clasping my hands together in gratitude. “Thank you for helping me,” I said. “Both for saving me from the bats and for helping me get through the gate. I’ll see you in class tomorrow.”
Elijah’s expression was unreadable, but it was intense as he stared down at me. “I would appreciate it if you allowed me to personally escort you to your dorm,” he said. The way he phrased it didn’t sound like he was asking. The gate had already shut behind him, so he seemed intent on coming with me.
