Chapter 8: In a Dark Corner

For a long moment, all I could do was stare down at the chocolate and then back at Richard’s stone-cold face before glancing back down at the chocolate again.

Richard was just sneering at me, his chin held high so he could glower down at me.

After I finally recovered from my shock, I bent down to pick up the chocolate, wiping off some dust that had gotten on top of it. “How could you do that?” I asked, hearing the anger and shock in my voice. “This was a gift. You can’t just treat it like that.”

Richard was unfazed by my words. He just looked hatefully at the innocent box in my hands. “I hate chocolate more than anything else,” he spat.

My jaw dropped before my eyes narrowed. “Well, there was no way for my friend to know that,” I snapped. I shook the box in his face. “She was just trying to send you a nice gesture because she admires you. The least you could do is accept the gift gracefully.”
