I hadn’t wanted this to be any more drawn out than it needed to be. Abner knew where I stood on a friendship with him, on anything with him, in the future. He had his chance, and he knew very well how he had dealt with it.
My reaction was nothing but understandable. Some may have even said it was generous. I could have refused to even talk to him outside the cafeteria.
I stood up from my seat, having said everything I could possibly say to him. There was nothing else left between us. Even though I was saddened by his betrayal, that was the extent of what I felt.
“Wait!” Abner called out before I could take any steps away from him, his hand on my arm. “Please, just wait!”
I glanced at him and sighed. I took a deep breath, ready to explain to him what I had already said. He had taken advantage of me, ruined my trust in him, and destroyed what had been the beginning of a friendship.
