The blaring sound of sirens ripped through the night, shattering the stillness.

Enemy attack!

I shot up from my bed, and across the room, Matthew did the same, his eyes wide with fear. Our beds were still new, the first real pieces of furniture we’d managed to put together a year after moving into our little home.

My heart thundered in my chest as I rushed over to him, gripping his shoulders tightly. “Matthew, listen to me,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady despite the chaos erupting outside. “This house is marked as civilian property. By inter-pack law, they’re not supposed to attack here as long as you stay inside.”

He stared up at me, his face pale with worry. “But what about you, Mira? Where are you going?”

I ruffled his hair, trying to muster some calm for his sake. “I’m a soldier, remember? I have to go to the frontlines.”

His lip trembled. “Isn’t that dangerous?”
