### **Arc 1: The Awakening**
#### **Chapter 2: Shadows of the Abyss**
The chaos of the city enveloped Li Wei and Li Mei as they hurried away from the towering beast. The sounds of destruction echoed around them—crumbling buildings, terrified screams, and the roars of the creature resonated in his ears. Li Wei gripped his sister's hand tighter, his heart pounding with urgency. He couldn't let anything happen to her.
"Where are we going?" Li Mei asked, her voice trembling with fear.
"To the market!" Li Wei shouted over the din. "It's more crowded there. We can find some of the martial artists and—"
Before he could finish, the ground shook violently again, throwing them off balance. Li Wei stumbled, barely keeping his footing. The sheer force of the tremor sent a cloud of dust swirling around them, obscuring their vision.
"Li Wei!" Li Mei cried, panic rising in her voice.
"Hold on!" he shouted, trying to maintain his grip on her. They pressed forward, navigating through the wreckage and frantic crowds. As they approached the market square, the atmosphere shifted; the terror was palpable.
The market was a maze of stalls and shops, many of which had been abandoned in the wake of the attack. Shattered wares littered the ground, and merchants shouted, urging people to flee. The air was thick with the acrid scent of smoke and fear.
Suddenly, the roar of the creature echoed closer. Li Wei's instincts kicked in, and he instinctively steered Li Mei toward an alley, seeking shelter from the chaos. They ducked behind a narrow wall, peering out at the street.
From their vantage point, Li Wei spotted the creature towering over the market. It was a horrifying sight—its massive jaws opened wide, revealing rows of jagged teeth. Panic surged through the crowd as people scrambled to escape. The martial artists continued their fight, but they were struggling to contain the creature.
"We can't just hide here," Li Wei murmured, feeling the weight of his inaction. "We have to help them."
"What can we do?" Li Mei's voice was small, but there was a hint of determination in her eyes. "We don't have powers like them!"
"Not yet," Li Wei replied, his resolve hardening. "But I can't just stand by while they fight for our lives. We have to do something."
Taking a deep breath, he peeked around the corner again. Master Zhao was still in the thick of the battle, coordinating the martial artists. He shouted commands, his voice booming over the chaos. But the creature was relentless, swiping at the fighters and sending them flying.
Li Wei felt a surge of adrenaline. He recalled the training sessions he had watched from a distance, absorbing every detail of the martial artists' movements. He had no skills of his own, but he couldn't let fear paralyze him.
"Stay here," he said firmly to Li Mei. "I'll distract it. You find somewhere safe."
"No! I'm not leaving you!" she insisted, her grip tightening around his arm.
Li Wei turned to her, meeting her determined gaze. "Mei, you're the most important thing to me. I need you to be safe."
Before she could argue, he dashed out from the alley, heart racing as he sprinted toward the battle. He could hear the creature's snarls and the clash of metal against its thick hide. The world around him blurred as he focused on the fight, adrenaline coursing through his veins.
"Hey, you ugly beast!" he shouted, trying to grab the creature's attention. The moment he called out, he felt a wave of terror wash over him, but he pressed on. "Over here!"
The creature turned its massive head, its red eyes locking onto him. For a moment, time seemed to freeze. Li Wei's heart raced as he realized he had done it—he had drawn its gaze.
The beast let out an ear-splitting roar, and with a swift motion, it charged toward him. Panic surged through Li Wei, but he didn't have time to falter. He dove to the side, narrowly avoiding the creature's massive paw as it crashed down where he had been standing.
He stumbled, regaining his footing just as he spotted Master Zhao and his fellow martial artists regrouping. They were watching him with a mix of surprise and disbelief. Li Wei felt their eyes on him, but he didn't have time to care. He needed to keep the creature distracted.
"Over here!" he yelled again, scrambling to his feet and waving his arms frantically. "Come on!"
The creature growled, shifting its attention back to him. It took a step forward, and Li Wei could feel the ground tremble beneath its weight. He glanced back, searching for Li Mei. She was standing at the alley entrance, fear written all over her face.
"Get to safety!" he shouted, knowing she wouldn't move until she was certain he was okay.
The creature roared again, its massive jaws opening wide as it lunged. Li Wei barely had time to react. He ducked just in time, feeling the wind from its snapping jaws whip past him. He rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding being caught.
"Li Wei!" Master Zhao shouted, finally taking action. He charged forward, his aura glowing bright as he launched a powerful kick at the creature's leg. The attack struck true, causing the beast to stumble and momentarily divert its attention.
"Get back!" Master Zhao yelled, his voice steady amidst the chaos. "You're not ready for this!"
"I can help!" Li Wei insisted, scrambling to his feet. "I won't just stand by!"
The older martial artist gave him a piercing look, but the creature was regaining its balance. Master Zhao turned back to face it, determination etched on his face.
"Fine! If you're here, then make yourself useful! Distract it while I find a way to bring it down!"
Li Wei nodded, adrenaline coursing through his veins. As the creature steadied itself, he recalled the training he had observed. He took a deep breath, focusing on the techniques he had memorized. He might not have any powers yet, but he could still fight.
He darted forward, dodging debris as he zigzagged around the beast. It turned its head, glaring at him with its menacing eyes, and he felt a rush of fear. But Li Wei pushed it aside, channeling the determination that had driven him this far.
"Hey! Ugly!" he taunted again, throwing a rock at the creature's snout. The rock bounced harmlessly off, but it was enough to get its attention once more.
With a furious roar, the creature swiped at him with its massive paw. Li Wei ducked, rolling to the side and narrowly avoiding the attack. He could hear the sounds of battle behind him, the martial artists regrouping for another strike.
"Now!" Master Zhao called out, and Li Wei looked back just in time to see several fighters charging forward, their weapons drawn. They struck the creature simultaneously, their blows landing with force. The beast let out a furious roar, thrashing wildly in response.
Li Wei took a deep breath, feeling a surge of courage. He had drawn its attention, and now it was time to play his part. He spotted a fallen piece of debris, a sturdy wooden beam, lying near him. Grabbing it, he rushed back into the fray, ready to face the creature head-on.
"Li Wei, no!" Li Mei's voice pierced through the chaos, but he couldn't turn back now. He was committed to this fight, determined to prove himself and protect his sister.
"Stay back, Mei!" he shouted, focusing on the creature. With the beam gripped tightly in his hands, he prepared himself to strike.
As the martial artists fought valiantly, Li Wei positioned himself at the creature's side, waiting for the right moment to strike. The battle raged on, but within him, a fire ignited. He might not have powers yet, but he would fight for his loved ones with everything he had.
"Come on, you ugly beast!" Li Wei yelled, adrenaline surging through his veins. "Let's finish this!"
With a fierce battle cry, he lunged forward, ready to join the fight against the creature and prove that even the untrained could stand against the shadows of the Abyss.
