Chapter 1: Plunging into a nightmare

2045. Virtual reality has long since ceased to be mere entertainment. For most people, it has become an escape, an escapism from the grim reality of a world gripped by social and political upheaval. But not for Anya. For her, it was a job. As a hacker, she knew about every bug and loophole hidden in these virtual worlds. But as she tapped into the new game Underworld, something about it gave her a strange feeling. This game was not like her usual entertainment.

Anya put on the neural interface helmet and felt a shiver for a moment as the interface loaded. The world that unfolded before her eyes resembled the most absurd fantasies - skies distorted by glitches, shimmering silhouettes of buildings that seemed ripped from different eras. It was chaos controlled by madness.

- Well, is everyone ready? - Max spoke up, clutching his virtual sword tightly. His avatar resembled a mighty warrior - just as he was in real life. His rugged features, muscular physique, and habit of controlling everything made him look confident, even if he had his own demons lurking inside him.

- I'm so excited! - Lisa, a streamer with millions of subscribers, bounced merrily in place. Her elf avatar was the perfect embodiment of beauty and grace. In reality, she was just as much a magnet for attention, but here in the game, it seemed she could be even better, even brighter.

- There's something wrong here," Dima, their youngest companion, a genius programmer who looked like a normal teenager, but his mind was far too advanced for his age, said quietly. His avatar was plain, not standing out, as if he didn't care about appearances at all in the virtual world. But his eyes, constantly watching the smallest details, said otherwise.

- You always suspect something," Lisa grinned, winking at him.

Anya didn't take her eyes off the code line that flickered in the interface. "Underworld was supposed to be just a new virtual game - battles with zombies, treasure hunts, the usual quests. But something about the architecture of this world made her uneasy. As if something or someone was watching them.

- We need to follow the plan," Max said sharply. - We'll find a way out, go through all the levels, and get out of here victorious.

Anya wanted to object, but at that moment the world around them began to shake. The ground beneath their feet fell, the air was filled with distorted sound, and the sky was covered with dark code lines. It was all so sudden that she barely had time to grab her sword.

- What the hell? - Max struggled to keep his balance.

- 'It's a mistake,' Dima said quickly. - There's something wrong in the code.

But the mistake was not simple. A huge silhouette appeared in front of them, distorted and frightening. It seemed to be made of broken pixels, and its movements were sharp and jerky. This creature with a bloodthirsty smile uttered just one phrase:

- Welcome to the Underworld. Your death will be the beginning of the game.

The screen in front of Anja's eyes filled with the words, "No Exit."

Silence. No one knew what to say. This wasn't just a game. A game where death is real.

- Shit," Anya whispered, feeling a shiver roll through her entire body. - We were trapped.

The world around them began to slowly disintegrate, as if reality itself was breaking into pieces. Anya realized that to survive, they would have to unravel not only the mysteries of this world, but also the true motives of those who had created it.

And no one guaranteed that they would be able to get out.
