We Will Never Truly Know, Will We?

It was a good day, as far as Leah was concerned, as she was finally discharged today, which meant her week-long confinement had finally come to an end. She could now go out freely and learn more about Hazel. As of that moment, she was in the backseat of a really nice car with Alexis, who had barely spoken to her. Leah surmised that it was because Hazel was originally not close to her sister, so she did not dwell on it. her mother was in the passenger seat, and from what she inferred, the man driving was married to Hazel's mother.

She did not know how to put it, but the car felt strangely tense. Hazel's mother would occasionally stare at her through the car window, then continue taking to her husband. Alexis did not raise her head from her phone since she sat in the car. It almost felt as if everyone was avoiding her or wary of her. She did not even want to mention Hazel's stepdad. the only words he had spoken to her were the civil greetings at the hospital.

It was a very familiar feeling, albeit to a significantly lesser degree. That was her life throughout her childhood with the Song family. Her mother, who was from a modest family, married the wealthy Patrick Song, even after she had a child out of wedlock. This caused her to be looked down on a lot and with time, she became very insecure. She was afraid of losing her status and resented Leah as a result. Leah was like a stain in her otherwise pristine life, and she strove to earn the affection of Patrick's daughter, Meyer, so she would always be on her husband's good side.

Leah looked out the window of the car. A sneer formed on her lips at her younger self. She had deluded herself into thinking that if she was the best and shone brightly, her mother would love her. It only made her angry, in fear that she would be kicked out if Leah outshone Meyer. She eventually learned that nothing she ever did would have been enough after she went to a boarding school, while Meyer was allowed to remain with her family.

She was actually surprised that she was able to think about all this without any pain or attachment at all. In the past, just seeing her mother shower Meyer with affection was enough to make her spiral. She was very jealous of Meyer, and this only made her look worse in the eyes of everyone.

Leah shook her head and tried to rid herself of the thoughts relating to the Song family. Doing so was of no benefit, other than making her indulge in self-mockery. She was not entirely sure how she was alive in someone else's body, but she was determined to be happy no matter what. Her past experiences will hopefully guide her on that path.

She was still lost in thought when Alexis suddenly sat up.

"Mum, you need to see this! Do you remember Feng Ge's manager?"

Leah tensed unconsciously.

Hazel's mother frowned. "Feng Ge? The drug addict?"

"Oh come on mom, you don't need to say it like that. You used to really like him."

The older woman scoffed.

"That was before he got embroiled in questionable drugs. He is a disappointment."

Hazel's stepfather smiled.

"You used to call him your son, could you really bear to abandon your child like that?"

Hazel's mother hit his shoulder. This caused him to laugh out loud, earning him a scowl.

Alexis interrupted again.

"Mom, do you remember his gorgeous manager?"

"The mixed-race girl? Yes, I do. What was her name again?"

"Her name is Leah Song. She died in accident a week ago."

The older woman's hand flew to her chest.

"Goodness, she was too young to die like that. Did she not get married recently? Her husband must be devastated."

"They were so great together. She even retired from managing Feng Ge for her husband. people say he did drugs because he loved her and got depressed when she got married."

Leah couldn't help it.

"People say things all the time, you should not always believe them."

Alexis became startled when Leah spoke. She then responded in a small voice.

"You are right sister, but it looks to be like that. There were even a group of netizens who shipped them. There are even edits and videos of them together where it was clear he loved her. He looked at her like she was his world."

"That feels exaggerated. They were close from childhood, and they maintained their friendship. These are all stuff used to generate clout." She said flatly.

Leah did not mean to be harsh, but these rumors about him being in love with her ultimately ruined him. It strained her relationship with Lingling, who was dating Gu Feng at the time and even caused their breakup in the end. That made hearing that rumor again very unpleasant for her.

She never got the chance to apologize to him.

Before her negative emotions could consume her, she realized that the car had become awkwardly silent again.

A lightbulb appeared on top of her head. She glanced at Alexis who had gone back to focusing on her phone and sighed. Her eyes met her mother's through the mirror. She was glaring at her this time. In response, Leah smiled awkwardly.

She did not mean to snap, however it looked like she was purposely attacking Alexis.

She sighed.

"It's pretty sad that she died like that and cut her career short for marriage. I always thought it was a bummer that she did."

When her sister realized she was the one being spoken to, she seemed nervous but still replied.

"I doubt I would. If my husband was as caring and doting as Aiden Ji, I would not care about anything."

Leah resisted the strong urge to sneer, but she still turned to face the window.

'Gods if only she knew what kind of monster he was.'

"We will never know for sure, will we?"

Alexis frowned.

"Why do you say it like that?"

A strange smile formed on her lips.

"How did I say it? For all we know, those public displays could be for his reputation and fame. We will never truly know what their life was like."
