"Almost half a decade."

Alex Foster let out a quiet laugh.

"I've known her since childhood; before you entered her life, she was confident and aloof.

"Once she met you, her self-assurance and dignity seemed to evaporate.

"During her pursuit of you, she faced numerous setbacks but remained persistent. When you finally agreed to be with her, she was elated for hours.

"As you prepared to leave for another country, she pleaded tearfully to accompany you. Even her father, Mr. Parker, couldn't dissuade her, but then illness struck...

"At that moment, I regretted my choice of studying psychology; perhaps I could have been of more help otherwise."

Alex Foster bowed his head, emitting a self-mocking chuckle.

"But now, I'm almost relieved I didn't have that opportunity!

"Nathan, Emma put too much faith in your affection for her, believing her illness would deeply trouble you, which is why she decided to keep it secret.

"And how did you respond, Nathan?"
