Maxim dashed through the city streets, each step surprisingly light, as if his body wasn't feeling the strain of running full speed. It was strange—he had been running for nearly ten minutes, yet he didn't feel winded at all. Could it be the crystals? He had felt the subtle shift in his energy since the meditation, but now, as he raced toward the café, the effects were undeniable. His mind wandered to the possibilities as he reached the entrance, quickly smoothing down his hair and adjusting his shirt. He had to make a good impression, especially after being late.
Taking a deep breath, he pushed the door open and stepped inside. His eyes immediately landed on Lila, sitting at a table with two of her friends. The soft light of the café accentuated her elegance, and her friends—Clara and Olivia—were whispering among themselves as they eyed him up and down. For a moment, Maxim could feel their judgment. He didn't have the polished look of Lila's usual crowd. To them, he was probably just some nerd, maybe even a charity case that didn't belong in their world.
But he wasn't about to let that intimidate him. With newfound confidence, perhaps fueled by the strange energy within him, Maxim strode over to the table, offering Lila a sheepish smile. "Sorry I'm late," he said smoothly, standing tall, meeting her friends' gaze directly. "Got caught up in some work at the lab."
Lila smiled, her relief visible as she saw him. "Maxim, it's fine. I'm just glad you're here."
Clara and Olivia exchanged glances, clearly unimpressed with his modest appearance. But then Maxim started talking, answering their questions about his work with an ease that surprised even him.
"I've been working on some energy storage systems for Lila's father's company," he said confidently. "It's fascinating—using crystals to absorb and release energy. We're seeing some breakthroughs that could really change the way energy is managed."
As he spoke, Clara and Olivia's expressions began to shift. Their initial judgment faded as they realized how capable he was.
"So," Olivia said, tilting her head curiously, "you're not just some lab tech. You're actually involved in the development?"
Maxim nodded, his confidence growing. "More than involved. I've contributed to some significant improvements in the efficiency of the energy storage process."
Clara raised her eyebrows, clearly impressed. "Wow, that's... actually pretty amazing."
Lila smiled proudly at him, her eyes shining with admiration. The awkwardness of his arrival was dissolving, and Maxim was beginning to feel more at ease. Just as the conversation flowed comfortably, however, the mood shifted with the entrance of someone unexpected.
A tall, handsome man in a designer jacket sauntered up to their table. He had the air of someone used to getting what he wanted—arrogant and self-assured. Maxim didn't recognize him, but the flash of tension in Lila's eyes told him everything.
"Lila," the man said, sliding into the seat next to her without invitation, "long time no see."
Lila stiffened, her smile faltering. "Victor… what are you doing here?"
Maxim's gut clenched as the man, now identified as Lila's ex-boyfriend, looked at her with a smug grin. "I heard you were back in town, and I thought we could catch up. You know, like old times." He glanced at Maxim dismissively before turning his full attention back to Lila. "You look amazing, by the way. I've been thinking, maybe we should give it another shot."
Lila's eyes narrowed. "Victor, we broke up for a reason. You cheated on me. It's not happening."
But Victor wasn't deterred. He leaned in closer, his voice smooth but insistent. "Come on, Lila. That was a mistake. I've changed. We were great together, you know it. Don't let this little fling get in the way of what we had."
Maxim could feel the tension rising, his hands balling into fists under the table. Every instinct told him to stand up and confront Victor, but something inside him, a deeper resolve, pushed him to do something even bolder.
Without thinking, Maxim leaned over, cupping Lila's face gently in his hand. Before anyone could react, he kissed her—soft, deliberate, and full of meaning. The café seemed to go silent for a moment, every pair of eyes on them, including Victor's stunned gaze.
When Maxim pulled back, he could see the shock in Lila's eyes, but there was also a spark of something else—something more than just surprise. She blinked, her lips still parted in surprise.
Maxim stood, offering her his hand. "Let's go," he said quietly but firmly.
Lila, still recovering from the kiss, slowly took his hand, her expression softening. She stood up, letting him guide her away from the table. Victor sat there, speechless, while Clara and Olivia exchanged looks of awe, their earlier skepticism completely erased.
"Well," Clara whispered as Maxim and Lila walked away, "I did not see that coming."
"Looks like Lila found herself a real hero," Olivia added, clearly impressed.
Maxim led Lila out of the café, his heart pounding in his chest. He could barely believe what he'd just done, but it felt right. More than right—it felt like he had finally taken control of something that had been out of his hands for too long.
Lila glanced up at him as they walked, her cheeks flushed, her expression a mix of confusion and admiration. "Maxim," she said softly, "what was that?"
He squeezed her hand gently, a small smile playing on his lips. "I couldn't let him talk to you like that."
Lila smiled back, her grip on his hand tightening. "Well… I'm glad you didn't."
They continued down the street, walking side by side, the weight of the moment still hanging between them. Maxim's mind raced, not just with thoughts of what had just happened, but of everything that lay ahead—the experiments, the crystals, the future. But for now, he was content. He had made his move, and for the first time in a long while, it felt like everything was falling into place.
As they disappeared into the evening, Clara and Olivia watched from the café window, both of them quietly marveling at what they'd just witnessed.
"Guess Lila's got herself a keeper," Clara said, shaking her head in disbelief.
"No kidding," Olivia replied, a grin spreading across her face. "That was like something straight out of a movie."
