The air inside the chamber was thick, suffocating, filled with the faint scent of burnt wax and aged parchment. Aricia’s fingers curled into fists at her sides as a shiver ran down her spine. The flames from the torches flickered wildly, casting elongated shadows along the marble walls, as if the room itself could sense the shift in reality.

She turned her head slowly, her scarlet hair cascading over her shoulder, her voice barely above a whisper.

"What are you?"

She had called this woman her mother for as long as she could remember, yet the truth gnawed at her insides like a ravenous beast.

Across from her, the Queen Mother smiled, an eerily gentle smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.

"What are you talking about?"

A crack echoed through the chamber, followed by a deafening shatter.
