Chapter 36

Chapter 36: The Edge of Defiance

The moon was a sliver in the night sky as Marco and Luca fled through the dense forest surrounding the mansion, their breaths coming in sharp gasps. The sound of footsteps and frantic shouts grew louder behind them. They knew they couldn't outrun Victor's men for long—their only chance was to reach the river at the forest's edge. If they could get there, they might lose their pursuers in the water's current and buy themselves precious time.

"We're close!" Marco whispered, grabbing Luca's arm to steady him as they weaved through the thick underbrush. He could feel Luca's pulse pounding under his grip, and despite the peril surrounding them, he found comfort in their shared heartbeat, each of them keeping the other moving forward.

Just as they neared the riverbank, a shot rang out, whizzing past Marco's ear and embedding itself in a tree trunk. They dove to the ground instinctively, the underbrush scratching at their arms and legs.

"Split up!" Marco urged, his voice laced with urgency. "We'll meet on the other side."

Luca hesitated, but Marco gave him a reassuring nod. "I'll find you. Trust me."

Reluctantly, Luca nodded and took off in the opposite direction, disappearing into the shadows. Marco crouched low, moving carefully through the trees, each step calculated to avoid alerting the guards who were closing in.

The sound of rushing water was now louder than the pursuit behind him, and Marco's heart leaped at the sight of the river glinting faintly in the moonlight. He scanned the area, searching for Luca, when a hand suddenly clamped over his mouth from behind, pulling him back against a solid chest.

"Don't move," a voice whispered, cold and familiar.

Marco froze, recognizing the voice instantly—Jake. He struggled, but Jake's grip was iron-tight.

"Did you really think I'd let you get away?" Jake murmured, his voice laced with bitterness. "Victor's got a nice bounty on your head. Enough to make anyone rethink their loyalties."

Marco's mind raced. He should have suspected this, should have known the cost of trusting someone in Victor's web. But he forced himself to stay calm, trying to gather his strength, readying himself for any opportunity to break free.

"You're just another pawn to him, Jake," Marco spat, keeping his voice low. "He'll discard you the second he doesn't need you anymore."

Jake chuckled, his breath warm against Marco's ear. "Better to be a well-paid pawn than dead."

Just then, a faint snap of a twig signaled Luca's approach from behind a tree. Marco's eyes darted to Luca's silhouette, silently pleading for him to stay hidden. But Luca's eyes burned with defiance, his gaze locked on Jake as he assessed the situation.

Luca took a careful step forward, his hands held up in mock surrender. "Let him go, Jake. We both know Victor isn't the kind of man you can truly trust."

Jake sneered, tightening his grip on Marco. "Why would I listen to you?"

"Because you don't know the whole story," Luca replied smoothly, his voice steady. "Victor's not just out for power. He's building something bigger—a syndicate that will control everything from politics to finance, using pawns like you to do the dirty work. But when he's done with you? You'll be just as expendable as the rest of us."

Marco felt Jake's grip falter slightly, the weight of doubt settling on him. Luca had struck a nerve, and Marco seized the moment, twisting sharply and elbowing Jake in the ribs. Jake grunted, releasing him, and Marco lunged forward, grabbing Luca's hand as they bolted toward the riverbank.

Jake recovered quickly, shouting after them, "You're not getting away that easily!" He raised his weapon, but Marco and Luca had already leaped into the river, the cold water enveloping them as they plunged beneath the surface.

The current was fast and unforgiving, pulling them along in its icy grip. Marco surfaced first, gasping for air, and saw Luca a few feet ahead, his face pale from the cold but resolute. They swam with the current, letting it carry them downstream, away from Jake and the guards who shouted from the riverbank.

After what felt like an eternity, the river slowed, and they scrambled onto the muddy shore, breathless and soaked. The forest here was dense, offering them temporary shelter. They collapsed against a fallen log, shivering in the night air.

"That… was close," Luca murmured, his breath visible in the cold.

Marco managed a faint smile, his hand resting on Luca's shoulder. "Too close. But we're safe. For now."

They sat in silence, catching their breath, the weight of their escape settling heavily over them. Marco's gaze drifted to Luca, his eyes filled with gratitude and something deeper, something he hadn't allowed himself to fully acknowledge until now. Despite everything, Luca had stayed by his side, risked his life to help him escape Victor's clutches. It was more than loyalty—it was love, fierce and undeniable.

As if sensing his thoughts, Luca turned to him, his expression softening. "Marco… I don't know where this is all going, but… whatever happens, I'm here with you."

Marco's heart swelled, and he reached up, brushing a strand of wet hair from Luca's forehead. "I don't deserve this. I don't deserve you."

Luca shook his head, his gaze unwavering. "Don't say that. We both have our demons. But together… maybe we have a chance to overcome them."

Without another word, Marco leaned in, his lips capturing Luca's in a kiss that was tender yet filled with the urgency of their circumstances. The world around them faded, the danger momentarily forgotten as they found solace in each other.

When they finally pulled away, Marco's resolve hardened. He knew what he had to do.

"We can't keep running," he said, his voice steady. "Victor will never stop hunting us. We need to confront him on our own terms."

Luca nodded, a fierce determination lighting his eyes. "Then let's end this, once and for all."

They sat in silence, their plan forming as they watched the sun begin to rise over the horizon.
